  • How many times have you walked past the Colorado State Capitol and have entered the building? From the first floor of the building looking up is quite the perspective to check out. With the curves which repeat as the inside of the dome makes it presence many floors above.

  • A little bit of snow fell in the Denver area yesterday, and with this precipitation I grabbed my camera as I went to some appointments in the downtown area. On the way I stopped by the Colorado State Capitol and ducked in an area to get out of the wind for a little bit, taking this image while there. Looking west from the capitol you can see the City and County of Denver Building across Civic Center Park on this snowy February day.

  • The past few years there has been construction occurring at the State Capitol of Colorado, and there still is ongoing on the north roof of the building. However it is possible to get a view of the dome without the work obstructing the view these days. A couple of months ago I had the opportunity to go on a tour of the building and climb the steps all the way to the glass ball at the top of the dome. It is a tight fit to get up there but it is definitely a different perspective none the less. This image was taken just prior to sunset on a nice November day in Denver.

  • The start of each year is always marked by the legislative session at the Colorado State Capitol. Earlier this month while walking near the capitol I decided to head inside to see of the activity. While most everything was taking place in committees and not on the House or Senate floor it was still nice to take a peek inside. As I walked around the building I looked for some photographs and captured this image in the southern section of the building leading into the senate chambers.

  • The Colorado State Capitol dome stands against a deep blue sky and with changing trees in the foreground. Situated on a hill there is the extra hint of power of the building as you look up climbing the steps to the building.

  • One of my favorite perspectives of the Colorado State Capitol is from Civic Center Park. It is possible to frame the building through the columns within the park which to me blends in the common architecture style of both of the buildings. The look from this location can differ depending on the time of year as well as the weather so it is always a view I check when walking through the park.

  • Just before Christmas 2011 almost twelve inches of snow fell in the Denver area. As the snow was ending I headed out and photographed around town. The last stop I made was at Willis Case Golf Course in northwest Denver. The area was filled with people sledding on the fresh snow, and as I made my way out on the golf course I looked for fresh snow and trees to photograph. From a distance I spotted a tree which looked interesting in its location and when I got there found the fresh snow surrounding the area which I photographed and created this image.

  • With the wildfires in Colorado (most of which are either at or nearing 100% containment) there are just a fraction of the normal fireworks display around Denver for the 4th of July. One which took place last evening was at Civic Center Park in Denver. Thousands of people showed up for the free concert by the Colorado Symphony and fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day.

  • Just before the Memorial Weekend holiday in 2009, I headed to Rocky Mountain National Park. It takes a while to plow Trail Ridge Road and open it once again for the season as it tops out over 12,000 feet, however usually by Memorial Day Weekend it is open again connecting Estes Park with Grand Lake. While they are working on clearing the road you can park and walk up the road, on this evening I did just that and after walking a few miles still didn't come across the plows just the work they left behind. A clean road and tall banks of snow.

  • Spring in the Mile High City. This is when the leaves start to come back to life as shown on the trees outside the center on Speer. With the snowiest months in the Denver in March and April you never know when spring will truly arrive though.

  • Just before Christmas a sizable snow storm moved through the front range of Colorado. As the snow started to fall I decided to head out and photograph in an area I had not been during a storm which was downtown Littleton Colorado. The above image was taken as I arrived in the area, and after spending a little more than an hour in the snow I left with a few inches more of snow on the ground as it picked up intensity during the time I was there. This made for an interesting drive home, but it was all worth it being out in the conditions taking pictures.

  • Earlier in the spring I was scouting the area around the airport and noticed an aircraft on final approach to Denver International Airport. Looking down the road I had noticed the contrast of the two fields ahead and now the plane overflying one of those fields which got me thinking. I headed back to this location to capture some departures on this day as the aircraft quickly climbed over the Colorado plains.

  • Another season at Lakeside Amusement Park will soon come to a close. You may have visited the park when you were a child, recently or only have driven by and noticed the Cyclone and Wild Chimpunk rides from Interstate 70. This image was taken as the Cyclone heads past me into the Colorado sunset on a nice last summer evening.

  • A nice November morning brought me to the area around the Colorado Convention Center and the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Walking around the area, I was looking of objects which could be interesting in an abstract manner. As I walked by the convention center, I noticed the light hitting the metal on the outside of the building for this image.

  • A spring storm dropped some snow along the Front Range of Colorado. With the warm temperatures the few days before this the accumulated snow did not amount to much but even so I grabbed my camera and headed out into the city. Walking near the Denver Art Museum I noticed the reflection of a building with the snow still on the granite bench for this image.

  • The full moon is once again approaching and in the evening it is bright enough to experiment with some night photography. I headed to Golden, Colorado and photographed Lookout Mountain. If you have ever driven the road you know there are many twists and turns along the way. From a distance back I set-up my tripod and worked to capture the cars along the road just after sunset while letting the bright moon illuminate the mountain itself.

  • On a November evening, I headed out to the plains of Colorado to photograph. Noticing that the wind was blowing out of the south I found myself south of airport to photograph takeoffs. It took a little while for a handful of aircraft to depart in that direction, but after a while I was able to capture some images of the lights moving through the night sky.

  • At Coors Field there is a marker indicating the first game at Coors Field in 1995. For two year prior to this the Colorado Rockies played at Mile High Stadium which is now the location of the parking lot next to Sports Authority Field. The reason why the opening gate was late in 1995 is not to allow time for the stadium to be complete, but due to the late start of the 1995 as a result of the 1994 labor issues in MLB.

  • Fall is definitely in the air in Denver and the color is also visible along Speer Blvd. The last couple of days while driving along Speer Blvd I have noticed the changing leaves in the city with some of the trees already empty of leaves there are plenty of trees in peak color this fall. This afternoon I decided to walk around this area to capture some images of the trees near the Colorado Convention Center. Depending on the weather in the next couple of days this scene could be quite different come midweek.

  • Outside of the Colorado Convention Center is a Big Blue Bear looking inside the facility. This piece titled I See What You Mean by artist Lawrence Argent is one which people stop to enjoy from inside and outside the convention center. I have tried to get a new perspective of this sculpture before but this morning I decided to play off of the bear peering into the convention center. Using a shallower depth of field so the bear is slightly out of focus my thought was to peer through the foliage nearby to give another perspective of the bear.

  • With the end of Daylight Saving Time this weekend this is a great time of year for evening photography and with that I headed out towards the airport area with my camera. When I first arrived the wind was blowing, when I left it was howling as a front prepares to head into Colorado. Just before heading out this evening I grabbed my fisheye lens which I haven't used in a little while and wanted to see what I could come up with using this speciality lens. I parked under the arrivals for Denver International and decided to point the camera towards the fast moving clouds above me capturing this image with a thirty second exposure.

  • As I was walking past the Art Hotel in the Golden Triangle area of Denver, I noticed the reflection of the hotel in the early morning light. History Colorado was providing the reflection of the building and I worked to find a perspective of whether or not to include the building in the image. For me including the building added perspective of size versus the close-up of the reflection in this instance.

  • During a snowstorm I found myself along Speer Boulevard in downtown Denver. Having driven this street countless time I had an image in mind as I approached the convention center which was the motion of RTD light rail making its way towards the Colorado Convention Center. It didn’t take long for a train to pass by as a used a slower shutter speed to show the motion of the train as it passed. This image is the second train which passed by during dusk as the first showed advertising and the clean look of the white cars in the snow helps to blend in the image.

  • Late summer is the time of year when fields of sunflowers on the eastern plains of Colorado attract photographers. The main challenge is finding where they are located as it changes each year. This year I found a field of sunflowers south of the airport near their peak. I spent a couple of afternoons photographing in this area. The image of this sunflower is the isolation of the forward sunflower as it leads the rest of the field towards the eastern sky. It is easy to lose track of time while photographing a field like this with so many options in a close space.

  • One evening I was photographing "behind" Green Mountain in Lakewood, which is the area along C-470. My goal that evening was to capture some long exposures of the freeway traffic, however I also did some long exposures towards the city. This image is the result, which is Green Mountain in the foreground as the lights of Denver illuminate the sky allowing use to see the defined ridges of the mountain. Rising above the stars appear on a cool fall evening in Colorado.

  • On the west steps of the Colorado State Capitol is a marker indicating the location of one mile above sea level in the Mile High City. As I walked past for some reason I noticed the marker and the imprint in the steps on this day. I have walked past this location hundreds of times and even photographed the location but this was something new for me. Working with a larger depth of field as I wanted both of the indicators readable, I positioned myself on the steps in a way to get them into the image for today.

  • On a warm November day, I headed to the Colorado State Capitol for a tour over the lunch hour. It was a nice fall day in the Mile High City which made it a perfect time to climb the nearly 100 steps to the dome. Walking outside provided a great view of Denver and the front range in the distance.

  • Denver is the Mile High City and in some places in town you will see mention of this elevation. Whether it is on the steps of the Colorado state capitol, a row of seats at Coors Field, designations on the side of some buildings or a marker along a trail in City Park it is something residents in Denver are proud of having in this city. This image is exactly one of these markers in City Park along a trail as people enjoy the park just west of downtown Denver.

  • Located between the Colorado State Capitol and City and County of Denver Building is Civic Center Park. While not only bridging the gap between the buildings the Greek Ampitheater also serves as a meeting place, and in this instance a welcoming to the City of Denver.<br />

This photograph was taken in 2008, which allows the reminder of the Rocky Mountain News to show on the white building across the park.

  • In Colorado there is always excitement for the first snow of the season in the city, even if it has been snowing in the mountains for quite a while. For the 2008-2009 snow season, the first snow was not until mid-November which is quite late. A few weeks earlier I captured the fall colors around the Governor's Mansion and thought it would be a good comparison to photograph around there during this late snowfall once again working the lines into the image.

  • After an early season snowfall in the mountains the fall colors are given an extra element of fresh snow on the peaks. It had been a couple of days since a few inches of snow had fallen amongst the trees leaving just a reminder of the snow on the mountains with a crisp blue sky.

  • As I was walking past the State Capitol I decided to stop and capture an image of the sunset. I have used this perspective in the past couple of years to capture the change of seasons as well as the morning light against the Rocky Mountains. With the sun setting to the southeast this time of year it allowed a little of a gradient of the darkening evening skies framed by the architecture of the building itself.

  • I have walked past the Governor's Mansion in Denver many times and have always noticed the lines of the fence which surrounds the location. One fall the colors were vivid still from the last fall color in the city. Using a shallow depth of field I focused on the brick post and let the lines lead to the color in the background.
