• As I navigated the roads near Marble, Colorado I came across a lake with calm water. This provided a great surface to capture the reflection of the Rocky Mountains in full fall colors. Just a day prior some early snow fell in the area which still was on the higher peaks in the distance.

 • The NFL Playoffs were in full swing with the Denver Broncos getting ready to host the AFC Championship game. Prior to the first playoff game for the Broncos numerous buildings in Denver have been changed to show orange and blue in the evening. The Daniels & Fisher Tower was only a week before in holiday colors, which is now sporting the orange and blue colors of the Broncos.

 • Located in Western Montana, Missoula is a little then the eastern part of the state. While living there for a few months during the fall I hiked up part of the hill to the east of the city to capture the fall colors changing around the University of Montana. Over the course of a couple of weeks it was a morning routine to go to this spot and photograph and after a while some of the regulars would stop and chat. There were a few locations I photographed from to show the clock tower with different backgrounds.

 • Upon the arrival at the outlook over the city the colors in the sky were starting to change color quickly as just enough clouds were in the sky for color to be present over Denver. This image was just prior to sunrise and as I have done in the past I let the buildings go to shadow for the most part in this image.

 • This was taken at Glacier National Park in Montana. Just for a change I transformed it to a black and white image which I think tells a little different story in comparison with the original image in color. With the rocks leading us out to the lake and onwards to the mountains it is not a mixture of colors but something which blends the scene together as one just after sunset on this evening.

 • I have walked past the Governor's Mansion in Denver many times and have always noticed the lines of the fence which surrounds the location. One fall the colors were vivid still from the last fall color in the city. Using a shallow depth of field I focused on the brick post and let the lines lead to the color in the background.

 • You most likely have seen the cross in the foothills to the west of Denver which was first illuminated in 1964. The location of the cross is Mount Lindo Cemetery which is accessed from Turkey Creek in Morrison. As I was driving along Alameda I noticed this perspective with the sunset and found a spot to capture the ridge line as well as the colors in the sky on a windy afternoon.

 • Upon landing back in Denver it appeared the clouds were lining up for a dramatic sunset in the mile high city. As I was driving home I was thinking about a couple of locations to take advantage of this light and came up with City Park due to time concerns. About a half hour prior to sunset everything was still looking great in the sky and as I quickly stopped home they mentioned it on the early news that it could be a colorful sunset once again. However in the next thirty minuted conditions started to change and the dramatic which was expected did not occur. Out at the park I came across another photographer who thought that the colors could be good this evening as well. The one thing which you have to do is get out and photograph. I waited past sunset to get some of the dusk light making the skyline of Denver stand out from City Park.

 • After an early season snowfall in the mountains the fall colors are given an extra element of fresh snow on the peaks. It had been a couple of days since a few inches of snow had fallen amongst the trees leaving just a reminder of the snow on the mountains with a crisp blue sky.

 • Located on the eastern coast of Greenland is the village of Ittoqqortoormiit with a population of around 400. The village sits on the Scoresbysund which during the winter months freezes over with sea ice. The village was founded almost one hundred years ago and sits above the Arctic Circle. The buildings within the town are colorful as this image shows looking out towards the sound and a large iceberg flowing out. Initially buildings were painted colors to represent what you could find in the village as it would help out those traveling. This is no longer the case, but many nordic villages can be found with colorful buildings.

 • On a summer morning in Boston I went for a walk along the Charles River. After crossing the Longfellow Bridge I walked along the north side by MIT when I noticed the colors on these small sailboats. With the morning calm the boats and their color reflected in the water as I used the edge to separate the image on a diagonal, bringing a little tension into the scene.

 • As I spent the fall in Missoula, Montana I had climbed the hill next to the University of Montana many morning to photograph the fall colors. On a Saturday I made my way towards the M itself and climbed a little beyond. It was here I came across a couple taking in the football game as their dog took a little nap.

 • Just outside of Arlee, Montana you will find the Garden of One Thousand Buddhas. These buddha sculptures surround the central figure in an eight spoke Dharma wheel. just to the north of this there is a small hill you can walk up which are covered in prayer flags. On the day I visited there was a little breeze which allowed the flags to move with the wind. Using a slower shutter speed I captured the colors and motion of the flags as they fluttered in the wind.

 • Over the weekend a fair amount of spring snow fell over Denver. With the warm temperatures many trees were already showing their blossoms which made for a nice scene to photograph. I headed out in the City Park area with my camera to capture some of these scenes. As I walked through the park I quickly found trees with red or white blossoms as well as trees already showing their leaves for the summer season. These colors made for an interesting contrast to the black, grey and white normally you would find in the winter.

 • It has been dry and clear most days in the last few weeks in Denver, with these clear skies I headed to City Park to see how this translated at sunset. From the golf course I watched the sun descend over the mountains and the orange and blue colors light become the backdrop over the city. While there has been quite a bit of growth in the city the last few years however from City Park it is not as noticeable from here as it is in other views of the skyline.

 • In Colorado there is always excitement for the first snow of the season in the city, even if it has been snowing in the mountains for quite a while. For the 2008-2009 snow season, the first snow was not until mid-November which is quite late. A few weeks earlier I captured the fall colors around the Governor's Mansion and thought it would be a good comparison to photograph around there during this late snowfall once again working the lines into the image.

 • Arriving at one of the more popular locations for sunset photographs of Denver, the sky was clear and the wind brisk. Soon the colors of the sky started to change as civil twilight passed. I noticed a few small clouds a little north of my location and thought it would be nice if those moved south to be in the image. It then came to mind this was the start of the system moving into the city over the next twenty-four hours which was fto bring snow to the city. After about ten minutes more clouds started moving in and I was wondering if enough clouds would develop in the right location for sunrise. As sunrise approached at 7:29 MDT, more and more clouds started to move into the frame and then shortly after sunrise the image was captured.

 • While driving past the Denver Convention Center and Denver Performing Arts Center it is hard not to miss the sculpture "The Dancers". There is always a mixed reaction to this piece of art. In November 2009 while walking around photographing during a weekend snow I stopped at the piece and wanted to capture an image which would show the piece but also a sense of where it is located. Trying to minimize my tracks in the fresh snow I took a view from a distance and thought minimal colors due to the weather.

 • There is a tree in Denver's Washington Park which I have photographed a handful of times. I was thinking of photographing this on my way home from picking up some film which was just processed. The late afternoon light was lighting up the remaining fall colors on a nice November day, and as I explored the different angles of the tree I decided to include the sun in this photograph as it had not been possible on the other days at Washington Park.

 • During late September of 2006, I was exploring the Colorado mountains and the fall colors. It was quite unexpected but a heavy snowfall also occurred around this time blending the seasons of fall and winter together. As I navigated the mountains in Central Colorado, I started to look at the landscape of the early winter and how the light of September fell onto the mountains. Normally the light we see with the first snowfall is a little later in the season and lights up the mountains in a different manner.

 • It is always fun to head to the mountains and capture the fall colors, but also at that time it is fun to try new techniques to capture the season as well. Hiking back from a lake I came across an area of snow with freshly fallen leaves. I started to capture this area but then thought of using a fisheye lens which another photographer with me had in their bag. Using the fisheye lens and a tripod to extend out the camera over the area of snow I was able to capture this image. As you can see the fisheye brings a different perspective to the image.

 • While in Montreal during the fall there was plenty of fall foliage in full display. The various colors on the trees and ground were quite impressive. As I explored the city I came across a pond with leaves which had fallen into the water. With the moving water I used a slow shutter speed to capture a little of the movement of the leaf against the rocks on the bottom.

 • The appearance of an iceberg is always changing. From the way the light hits the ice and the ever changing effects of the water of the piece of ice. An iceberg may have been in its current disposition for some time or it may constantly be rolling which usually happens after a piece calves from the berg. As the ice touches the water you can always find some interesting textures. This is due to the ever changing effects of the water on the structure as you can see in this image. What drew me to take this picture was the curving line amongst the layers of ice on the berg. This allows you to see the different shades of color in the ice and also wonder how long it has been since some of the ice had pealed off of the iceberg.

 • Fall is definitely in the air in Denver and the color is also visible along Speer Blvd. The last couple of days while driving along Speer Blvd I have noticed the changing leaves in the city with some of the trees already empty of leaves there are plenty of trees in peak color this fall. This afternoon I decided to walk around this area to capture some images of the trees near the Colorado Convention Center. Depending on the weather in the next couple of days this scene could be quite different come midweek.

 • At the end of April 2013, I headed out to the plains to see how the growth was coming along for some future ideas for photographs. During the scouting I came across some fields with fresh growth and those with contrasting color. As I stood on the side of the road I worked with this concept and while moving the camera captured the fields before me. As I head back to this area in the summer it will be interesting to see how the fields change of the course of the growing season.

 • During the summer of 2014 I was out photographing around Douglas Island when I encountered a boat heading into the fog to go fishing. This is a color photograph, which if you look carefully you may be able to find a glimpse of some color near the pilothouse. After I took this image, I headed back towards downtown Juneau where the fog was not bad at all along the Gastineau Channel.

 • I headed to a park I have passed many times while traveling on Speer Blvd but never realized what it consisted of as I sped on past the park. Alamo Placita Park is one of those parks which people have seen, but never have stopped more so as it is a small neighborhood park. Even the City and County of Denver website has limited information about the park itself. Walking around the park the image I wanted to walk away with was easily the tie in to Speer and the limited knowledge of the park. As it was near sunset I first thought about the lights of cars passing by the park, but seeing this set of stairs leading into the park this was a good place to start with the traffic taking the background. At first I was going to leave this as a color image, but once the sun set the color of the stone was changed with the various color temperatures of the nearby lights so I converted it to a black and white image which I feel helps tell the story of the lesser known park as well.

 • One evening I headed out to the Lowry development on the east part of Denver. This area was once home to the Lowry Air Force Base and over the past fifteen years it has been redeveloped into a new neighborhood. Some of the more noticeable reminders of the past are the large hangars which remain, one of which is the home to the Wings over the Rockies Air and Space Museum. As the sun started to set, it looked like I may luck out and get some color in the clouds. Once I settled on photographing near the hangars I set-up my shot and hoped for something to happen and the evening did bring a little color to the sky.

 • During a brief snow in Denver I headed towards Civic Center Park to photograph. As the snow tapered off the foothills started to become visible in the distance. With the fresh snow on the grass and the fall color in the leaves I found myself on the capitol steps to capture this image west through Civic Center Park towards the City and County of Denver building.

 • It was an interesting morning weather wise as some change is in the air. Over the city there was clouds but as you looked out towards the mountains it was blue sky. Walking around Civic Center Park I headed up the steps of the Colorado State Capitol and was treated with a nice view of the mountains with still some fall color in the area.

 • Greenland is not just about the icebergs and glaciers, but also the geology of the landscape. As you sail through the fjords this is quite apparent looking at the majestic landscape which surrounds you. As the glaciers have retreated it exposes the texture and detail of the rock which varies across different eras of time. This image is a close up of some of that rock and the variations in the color which can be found. Not too far from sea level we came across this area and positioned myself on the rocks next to it in order to capture the lines and textures of the scene.

 • When you arrive at the airport in Boise, there it states Welcome to the City of Trees as you take the escalator towards baggage claim. Prior to heading to the airport I stopped by Ann Morrison Park near the Boise River. As sunset was approaching the park was filled with people playing disc golf as well as leaves from the trees as the peak color had passed. Once again getting low to the ground to capture the grass and leaves I captured the image.

 • In late summer of 2007 when I was living in Missoula, I headed to Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge in the Flathead Valley one evening. With the fires in the area that summer I didn't know what to expect in terms of sunset but thought I would chance it at this time knowing the water levels would be lower allowing for the s-curve flow to show at the location. The fires to the west helped add some color to the sky on this evening in the Flathead Valley.

 • The new Alaska State Museum reopened in Juneau in 2016. While traveling to Juneau they were constructing the new building which I was able to watch grow from the ground up during my visits there. On a November day, I was walking past the museum and noticed the reflection being case from the glass windows in front. The majority of this image is glass which is reflecting the siding of the museum which is showing a little on the right of the frame, looking carefully you can see the difference in the color between the two.

 • It had been clear in Juneau for quite a few days in a row so I took advantage of this and headed to Sandy Beach to photograph the Treadwell Mine Pump House. In the winter sunrise will happen down the Gastineau Channel which allows the sunrise color to fall behind the pump house which I captured just prior to the start of winter. On this morning, low tide had just occurred at 1.2′ and it was starting to head towards the 20.1′ just after lunch.
The Pump House is one of the few remaining structures of Treadwell and is a well known site for those familiar with the Juneau area.

 • I started 2017 in Juneau, Alaska. That day I headed out to photograph sunrise and sunset which both brought plenty of color. For sunset I was at Auke Bay when I started to notice the color starting to appear in the sky. I found a good spot near Statter Harbor and watched the sunset for the evening. Plenty of people stopped by this location to capture the sunset using smart phones to large cameras. Towards the bottom of the image you can see a little bit of a harbor seal which was enjoying swimming in front of us this evening as well.

 • Grant Humphreys Mansion is located near Governors Park and as I found out after the fact the mansion is haunted. When taking the image I was thinking color all the way with the nice blue of the sky, green of the grass as well as some leaves in the tree; however with the nice contrast a change to black and white worked even better for this result.

 • Located in the southwest corner of Lake Tahoe, Emerald Bay is a picturesque location on its own. On this morning I work up early to capture sunrise over the lake to find most overcast skies. Finding a position to capture the scene I was quickly treated to a burst of color over the mountains in the distance at the pre-dawn light which last just a couple of minutes.

 • Veterans Day led me to Fort Logan National Cemetery for some images. As there were quite a few people out today, I ventured to areas which did not have people at the time in order to respect their privacy at the cemetery. I noticed many flowers throughout the grounds, but the flags in the below image attracted my attention and after looking at the image in Lightroom decided converting it to black and white was more powerful than just in color.

 • An October snow storm brought close to a foot of snow to Denver. As this was in the middle of fall there were still plenty of leaves on the trees. A tree near the State Capitol was full of color which feel onto the fresh snow and brought the contrast of the seasons into light.

 • This image was on the north shore of Oahu while on a visit to Sunset Beach. As I waited for the sun to set I looked behind me and saw the rainbow complimented with some nice warm light on a pleasant January afternoon. It was great to have my feet in the sand and enjoy the sun as it soon headed down with a small bit of color on that evening.

 • Fresh snow had fallen throughout Juneau earlier in the week and cold weather and clear skies soon followed for a number of days. Taking advantage of these conditions I headed out to photograph around the area. In the middle of winter this is really only about seven hours but with the low light it is easy to take advantage of all that time quite quickly. Stopping by Auke Lake on the way back into the downtown area was more so a chance stop at the right time as some color filled the skies over Mendenhall Glacier in the distance.

 • One autumn I was in the Steamboat Springs area and headed north towards Steamboat Lake State Park. As I got to the lake and saw the color towards Hahn's Peak I knew this was a place to stop and photograph. From the lake reflection, with a boat on it, to the fields across the lake with livestock all the way up Hahn's Peak with a hint of snowfall it was just a perfect scene that afternoon.

 • In early November the latest sunrise of the year in Denver takes place. Sunrise was at 7:32 AM MDT, tomorrow sunrise is at 6:33 AM MST due to the end of Daylight Saving Time.

When I arrived at a popular location to photograph Denver I noticed there were clouds to the east of downtown Denver. The key with the clouds is if they are thick are thin clouds which will light up just prior to sunrise. I got lucky this morning with vibrant color for a couple of minutes providing this look of downtown Denver.

 • For the first morning of 2014 I headed out to photograph the skyline of Denver as I have done the past couple of years. This morning there was a system which was moving through which prevented a colorful sunrise as we have had the past couple of years. It was still nice to get out and watch the first morning of the year start with Denver as a backdrop. As I left the location some snowflakes were present as well.

 • As I was walking along Ocean Beach in San Francisco, I headed up the hill towards the Cliff House, from here you can look directly down on the beach. This is where I noticed the beach and water coming together and also leaving a reminder of the prior wave coming onto the beach during low tide. Using a telephoto lens I was able to zoom in close to the beach and waited from the next wave too come onshore giving three distinct variations of color.

 • I was looking out the window at the clouds moving just prior to sunrise. I grabbed my camera and quickly headed down to the Gastineau Channel just as the sun was rising for the last day of November. With some clouds around the sky started to light up over some mountains with fresh snow on them from the rain earlier in the week. The colorful skies lasted for a little while before the overcast skies moved back in for the remainder of the day.

 • Located in southern Colorado the Great Sand Dunes are still slowing building as the wind blows sand and soil deposits from the Rio Grande and its tributaries. Even with the daily changes with the blowing wind the dunes remain familiar to most who visit. There are plenty of photographic opportunities in the dunes whether using black and white or color as your palette. For this photograph, it was the lines of the dunes and contrast of the blue sky which drew me to capture this image on an early morning in May 2008.

 • You never know what to expect when spring is around in Denver, it could be 70 degrees one day and snow the next. With this variety this makes it a great time to photograph around the city as the variety in color and potential for the snow in the city or mountains remains. On this day I was photographing around City Park and decided to make my way towards the golf course where I found trees in full bloom. Using this as a foreground I framed the city of Denver behind and naturally the mountains as well for this image.

 • I was heading back across San Francisco Bay to Bay Farm Island as the sky started to light up during sunset. This was a nice surprise after a day exploring the City and Angel Island.

 • It is not the exterior of Harpa which gives much to take in and photograph, the inside is full of interesting elements as well. While walking around the building I noticed the shadows in the various areas of the complex. As I headed up to the second floor I immediately came across the following scene. The challenge here was to position myself to capture the color reflection, but also not to block traffic which was in the building at this time as well. I experimented with having people walking through the scene, but ended up with the image of just the shadows on the floor of Harpa.

 • Walking through Havana in the morning you can watch the city come to life. Just after sunrise I was along the Malecon and came across a group of men who were fishing prior to heading to their daily jobs. This was a common site along the seawall most mornings. • As I explored Quebec City, I found a small street in the Lower Old Town which had umbrellas hanging the small area. Over the course of two days I visited this street multiple times to capture the colorful umbrellas with a different sky as a background. On my final day in Quebec City it was a nice clear day which allowed me to have a constant background but also position the sun to allow it to show just a little bit behind one of the umbrellas.
