• While in Montreal during the fall there was plenty of fall foliage in full display. The various colors on the trees and ground were quite impressive. As I explored the city I came across a pond with leaves which had fallen into the water. With the moving water I used a slow shutter speed to capture a little of the movement of the leaf against the rocks on the bottom.

 • As the Skoga River approaches the coast it drops 200 feet off the cliffs which were once the southern shoreline of Iceland, the coast is now about 3 miles south. As with many waterfalls in Iceland you can get quite close to the falls either by walking along the river or taking the steps to the top. Approaching the waterfall I noticed areas of grass to the side and headed in that direction to capture the waterfall. Being just a couple of hours from Reykjavik this is a popular place to visit but it is hard to tell that by using the field as a foreground element.

 • On my final day in Havana a small weather system moved into the city bringing up the wind as it passed through the city. Even with the wind I headed out to the Malecon and was treated to the waves crashing against the seawall. I watched in awe of the force of the waves but also used that time to see where the waves were breaking, with that knowledge I searched for an interesting foreground and pointed my camera. Within five minute this wave crashed into the seawall send up a large wave with great force.

 • After walking behind the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, I was treated to this view as I completed the loop. Clear skies allowed for the late afternoon sun to cast a rainbow on the waterfall while also providing details to the textures of the grass and rock. The waterfall itself is 200 feet and with the shape of the rocks it is possible to walk behind the waterfall, getting a little spray depending on the wind conditions.

 • Walking through Havana in the morning you can watch the city come to life. Just after sunrise I was along the Malecon and came across a group of men who were fishing prior to heading to their daily jobs. This was a common site along the seawall most mornings. As I was capturing the scene a cruise ship entered the harbor for the day bring an additional splash of color to this scene.

 • As we left the calm water of the protected fjords we encountered a couple of icebergs on their own. As we approached them we had the open oceans waters which provided a backdrop of distance in this image under overcast skies on this afternoon. I found a position which gave me a forward looking view from the vessel we were traveling in order to capture the vast surroundings and let the remaining pieces of the icebergs fill the images as the central part of the image.

 • An overcast morning can lead to creativity while photographing, which was the case on this morning in Hawaii. The overcast skies allows for some longer shutter motion and with that you can give a scene a different feeling. With the water moving along these rocks on Oahu the water turns into almost a fog on the rocks as it climbs and recedes on them in a quick fashion just after sunrise.

 • Visiting Lolo Pass on the Montana/Idaho border, I came across a small stream near the pass and watched the water slowly move over plants in the bottom of the stream. Using a slow shutter speed, I pointed my camera towards the water to capture the slight motion of the stream against the elements on the bottom.

 • The motion of the water can be mesmerizing. After a day of sailing in the Inside Passage I started to capture the ripples of the waves left behind as the Malaspina headed south towards Bellingham, Washington. Using a shallow depth of field (in the not so shallow waters), let me put the further ripples slightly out of focus as they fall out of the scene and once again flatten from the presence of the ship.

 • As I spent the day exploring on Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay, I came across a water storage unit. With the age of the wooden storage structure I got close to capture the details of the wood and metal rings which were starting to rust. From the position I was in of the structure I was careful to position one of the tension tighteners so it was in the upper right of the frame.

 • Getting close to the ice which you encounter in the fjords of Greenland really shows you some of the details which you can find. For safety it is the smaller pieces which you can get closer, but these are also those which have been moving more in the water and over time rolling in the water. With these movements you get more of the detail from the water either melting in different directions on the piece of ice or the changes from being above or under water at various times. Looking close at this piece you start to see those lines of water in the ice and the different depth of the ice. This allows the light to reflect differently while you look at the piece.

 • The appearance of an iceberg is always changing. From the way the light hits the ice and the ever changing effects of the water of the piece of ice. An iceberg may have been in its current disposition for some time or it may constantly be rolling which usually happens after a piece calves from the berg. As the ice touches the water you can always find some interesting textures. This is due to the ever changing effects of the water on the structure as you can see in this image. What drew me to take this picture was the curving line amongst the layers of ice on the berg. This allows you to see the different shades of color in the ice and also wonder how long it has been since some of the ice had pealed off of the iceberg.

 • While exploring the North Shore of Oahu, I came across an interesting grouping of rocks. I sat and watched as the waves of the ocean pushed up on the rocks and then as the water cascaded back into the ocean like a waterfall. Depending on the strength of the tide each time it determine the effect of the water. From some rocks higher up I set-up my tripod to capture this waterfall, and just like when photographing any waterfall you want to use a little longer shutter speed in order to capture the motion and not freeze the water. With the body of water also in the image, I was also able to capture the motion letting it add to the photograph.

 • It was a quiet morning along La Jolla Cove in Southern California. As I looked down at the sand in the cover I notice the rock in the sand. The water would come up to and past the rock and then recede back to the ocean. After noticing this for a little bit I set up my tripod to capture this with a long exposure. Using a long exposure with water will smooth it but also as it moves in an area without water give it a little ghostly effect. The timing of the exposure was what I was concerned in when I took this image and how the water would show in the frame.

 • As I stood in the pre-dawn light on the beach in Hawaii, I noticed two rocks in the sand which the tide was coming to during each rotation of water. Using the low light I set up my tripod to capture the two rocks and the motion of the water with a longer exposure. Once my image was framed I wait for the water to move up the beach and let extended shutter opening turn the water into a dream-like state.

 • A nice day in the Bay Area found me at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. With low tide quickly approaching I was able to walk lower on the beach and watch the patterns being left as the water slid back into the ocean. In this image I got the camera close to the sand being careful where the shadow of my camera showing and not getting too low. The other challenge is being aware of where the water is coming ashore with the camera just above the sand.

 • I was in Washington DC during the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. I was a there a little past the peak but there was still plenty to capture along the Tidal Basin as well as around the city. It was a little windy one of the days I was there and noticed the movement of the water in the basin. With the cherry blossoms starting to fall off from the wind as well there were areas in which the blossoms were gathering. I pointed my camera towards these areas and let the motion from the water make the image.

 • While visiting San Diego a few years ago, I made a pre-sunrise trip to La Jolla Cove. One of the things I noticed was the motion of the water coming in and the rock which was being covered on each iteration. Using the low light to my advantage I was able to use a slower shutter speed on my camera and capture the motion from the water in the image.

 • I was standing on the Juneau-Douglas Bridge photographing the whale sculpture and Downtown Juneau when a Holland America cruise ship departed for the day. I quickly found a view down the Gastineau Channel to capture the cruise ship in the distance with the whale in the foreground. The water feature of the whale sculpture is not constant, thus I waited a few minutes for the water to turn on again and captured this image.

 • While traveling along the Oregon coast I made my way to Bandon, Oregon during a low tide. Walking out on the sand I was along to get close to many of the rocks along the shore on a sunny February day. One perspective I like is to get the camera close to the water as in this image. Using a wide angle I let the camera get close to the incoming wave, without trying to get the camera or myself wet at all. With the morning light, I had Face Rock along the coast here as a backdrop and finding a spot on the beach which would put the rock where I wanted it in the image. While I was judging the incoming water with the camera a small group of people were finding it fun to watch me trying to get myself and the camera dry, which was successful on this day.

 • One winter while in Juneau I headed out to Treadwell on a Sunday afternoon. Treadwell is an old mining area on Douglas Island across from downtown Juneau. I started off by exploring the area away from the Gastineau Channel and then headed back towards the parking lot along the water. With the Taku winds blowing that day, but less than in the prior few days, it was nice to have the wind at my back. After passing the pump house, I turned around to look at the building noticing this image as the pump house is surrounded by water during high tide.

 • As you get close to some of the icebergs in the water you start to see the details of the ice and variance in the texture. With the ice floating in the water over time the waves start to make their mark and it can be seen in the patterns within the ice. This is a closeup of a larger piece of ice which we circled around on a zodiac while keeping our distance for safety. As we continued to move and view the piece from different angles the light would change the look of the piece.

 • While heading south to Bellingham on the M/V Malaspina there are some limited open water crossing along the inside passage the path Alaska Marine Highways makes the journey. On the first of these we crossed the Dixon Entrance which is also where the border is located between the United States and Canada. During this crossing the waters were quite calm which made the for an enjoyable sunset on the deck during this March evening.

 • In November 2009 I headed to La Jolla, California while in town for the holiday. With a storm having moved through the area over night as well as high tide the water was coming up to the steps down to the cove bringing man and nature merging in the scene. Spending some time to capture the scene brought me the above photograph as well as some wet feet from standing on the landing for a couple of shots as well.

 • As I explored North Douglas in Juneau, Alaska, I came across some frost on the rocks by the water. With the large change in tides which takes place every six hours this is not too uncommon as the weather starts to get cooler as was the case when I took this in November one year. As I got closer to the rocks the detail which could be found on each one was quite interesting and also caught my attention to photograph for a little while.

 • As I explored the small village of Ittoqqortoormiit I slowly made my way up the road towards the helipad above the city. This is used to transport passengers about 40km to the nearby airport of Nerlerit Inaat (which was also where I flew into from Iceland). Once at the top of the hill there was a nice view of the village and onward to Scoresby Sound. For this image I used a shallower depth of field which puts the village slightly out of focus the further it gets towards the water and onward towards points unknown.

 • As we approached Sawyer Glacier in Tracy Arm from the top of the boat I captured the above scene. When we left Juneau it was overcast, and upon leaving Gastineau Channel it was quite foggy. Heading into Tracy Arm the conditions started to clear which provided many scenes like this throughout the day. The ice in the water is from the Sawyer Glacier which is just around the corner in this image.

 • It's back to clouds and some rain in Juneau. As I headed back downtown and noticed the view of the pilings under the pier. Using a long lens I isolated a subset of pilings and worked to catch the reflection in Gastineau Channel. The tide was at a normal level allowing some of the growth to show just above the water level at this time today.

 • As I was standing along the boardwalk in Juneau, Alaska I noticed the piers under a section of walkway and how the evening light was lighting them up a little from their normally dark place. Initially I took some images of the scene, but after a little while I moved to a longer exposure length and slowly moved the camera in a vertical direction which match the primary direction of the wood pilings. The result of this movement is the look of the pilings in this photograph as well as a smoothing of the water of the Gastineau Channel below.

 • Driving ‘Out the Road’ north of Juneau I stopped at the Eagle River as I caught the low sunlight around noon on a clear winter day. With the recent snow and cold part of this river was iced over however the water still continued to flow towards the Lynn Canal. For me the river leads to the sunlight in this midday image bringing the two elements together.

 • I have captured sunrise over Denver from Sloans Lake many times. On this morning with the difference in temperature between the water and the air steam formed right at sunrise but soon burned off as the sun climbed in the sky. Just as I was about to leave this location, a flock of birds flew into the frame for a few seconds which I was able to capture.

 • The skies have cleared and the full moon allowed for some evening photography during a November week in Juneau. With these conditions, I headed to Skater’s Cabin which is along Mendenhall Lake.

Upon arriving at the parking area for the cabin it was cool and clear and the moon was just rising over the Juneau Ice Field. This allowed for a long exposure as the moon providing the lighting this evening. After taking this image I walked over to the lake which is showing some signs of freezing over due to the cold nights however there is still more water than ice visible at this stage.

 • From the back of the M/V Ocean Nova I watched the sunset as we sailed south through the a fjord in the Northeast Greenland National Park. The layers of the rocks and water itself helped ground the image to provide a sense of place with the orange sky during dusk which also lit up the only clouds I saw on this day. While this was in early September, it would only be a couple of months until this area is frozen over with sea ice for the winter.

 • In late summer of 2007 when I was living in Missoula, I headed to Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge in the Flathead Valley one evening. With the fires in the area that summer I didn't know what to expect in terms of sunset but thought I would chance it at this time knowing the water levels would be lower allowing for the s-curve flow to show at the location. The fires to the west helped add some color to the sky on this evening in the Flathead Valley.

 • While visiting the big island of Hawaii a few years ago I decided to try something a little different while photographing waterfalls. I zoomed in on this waterfall to capture the detail of the waterfall and then slightly moved the camera a little bit during the long exposure. The end result is not only capturing a soft look of the mossy background at this waterfall but also an interesting feel to the water stream contrasting with the green in this image.

 • During the initial snow on Friday February 3rd, I made my way to Sloans Lake which is west of downtown. Walking around in the snow I headed to an area of trees when I saw this one along the lake. The tree next to the water with the snow still falling is what grabbed my attention. One of the items to watch while photographing in the snow is where you are walking as the trail you make could end up being in the next picture you want to take. For this image it was not an issue, and I was also careful just in case I wanted to head back later to photograph some more.

 • I spent some time along the Oregon Coast in the southern part of the state one February. During this time I found an open beach and did some long exposure photography at sunset to capture the motion of the water as it came onto the shore. At low tide there was plenty of opportunity to try different angles, however with that there was also the challenge of the tripod sinking in the wet sand. This image is looking straight out to the ocean where the sun had set about 15 minutes prior, which allows some motion in the waves.

 • You may not know it but the entrance into Glacier National Park once went over the Belton Bridge as seen in this image. The Belton Bridge was built in 1920 and for a couple of decades was the method to get visitors over the Flathead River from Highway 2 into the park. Now this is a walkway over the river and a quiet location you can watch rafters pass below or just relax. During a winter visit I found pristine snow in this location which made for a fun place to photograph along the water. I found this spot looking back towards the bridge and the snow covered mountains in the distance.

 • After a few days of snow a the clouds cleared and nice sunny day was provided for the Juneau area. With this change I headed towards the Shrine of St. Therese to capture some images along Lynn Canal. Earlier in the month with higher winds there were people out surfing near the shrine, however with the lower waves on this day the surfers were not able to take advantage of the sunshine. While exploring the area around the shrine I found some fresh snow still along the water low sun providing some late morning light.

 • On the day I visited Tracy Arm and South Sawyer Glacier, there was plenty of ice in the area in front of the glacier as our boat slowly made its way around the area giving us view of the glacier. At this point instead of being on top of the boat where most people were viewing, I headed to the back which allowed me to get close to the water. From this perspective I am able to capture the ice in the picture and help tell the story of that day.

 • Just outside of Wrangell, Alaska I found this scene while riding Alaska Marine Highways to the south. The outcropping of trees in two instances with the ongoing water drew my attention when I took this image. Initially it was just the one instance but as the ship continued onward the second group appeared. With some little rain in the area the trees are facing the unknown in the spring in Southeast Alaska.

 • While enjoying some ice cream at a shop in Hawai'i which gave you a view of a small beach in Lahaina I noticed the waves coming in and out. Putting my ice cream down on a warm February day I captured the lines of the water coming on the beach. This didn't last long however as some a whale was spotted in Lahaina Harbor quickly changing the focus of everyone.

 • It was a November morning with some rain in Juneau. I headed back to Douglas but this time Sandy Beach.

It was just past low tide so there was still plenty of open area to walk around on the beach with the rain falling. After about a quarter mile I reached the Pump House which brought water into the mining area of Treadwell. Looking down the channel there was nice layering as I photographed between the pilings and the line between them for drying fish.

 • The Sun Voyager sculpture sits along the water in Reykjavik, Iceland. The sculpture by sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason is described as an ode to the sun. Playing off of this name when I found myself there on an early morning I decided to bring the sun into the photograph. Finding a nice composition was the task at hand which I could then position myself to include the sun into the scene as well. By using a small depth of field (f/22) and placing the sun right at the end of the sculpture it provides the star effect in the image and also helps eliminate some of the sun glare.

 • On a summer morning in Boston I went for a walk along the Charles River. After crossing the Longfellow Bridge I walked along the north side by MIT when I noticed the colors on these small sailboats. With the morning calm the boats and their color reflected in the water as I used the edge to separate the image on a diagonal, bringing a little tension into the scene.

 • As I navigated the roads near Marble, Colorado I came across a lake with calm water. This provided a great surface to capture the reflection of the Rocky Mountains in full fall colors. Just a day prior some early snow fell in the area which still was on the higher peaks in the distance.

 • As I spent time on Diamond Beach looking at the icebergs washing ashore, I also was sure to look at what was a little further back from the edge of the water. This one iceberg intrigued me as it sat on the beach with just black sand around the base. As I walked towards it, I noticed the background and found a spot where I could combine the two elements as one. The afternoon light also provided a nice shadow of the iceberg which I was sure to position into the frame as well for this image.

 • Located along (and in) the City Pond, the Town Hall of Reykjavik is a modern building with lines with draw you into the building itself. From the west you enter the building over a slightly curving path over the water which on many days will give you time to check out the many birds which spend time in the pond. The building is open to the public and features a large 3D map of Iceland which you can view in the lower level of the building.

 • As I positioned myself for sunset along the southern Oregon coast I stayed a little after sunset to capture some of the motion of the ocean along the water. After some images of photographing directly at the ocean I turned my camera to capture along the coast. This image was just by waiting for the waves to come up the beach during a low tide which provided a wide open space on the beach this late February evening.

 • Walking along Marina Bay in Singapore I came across the Merlion. The Merlion is a mythical creature with the head of a lion and body of a fish which is a symbol of Singapore. As Singapore is near the equator the length of golden hour or dusk is quite short and limits the amount of photographing you can do with the nice evening light. I found a spot along near the sculpture and worked to compose my image to bring in parts of the city and also show the motion of the water with a little longer exposure giving this image.

 • As I was walking along Ocean Beach in San Francisco, I headed up the hill towards the Cliff House, from here you can look directly down on the beach. This is where I noticed the beach and water coming together and also leaving a reminder of the prior wave coming onto the beach during low tide. Using a telephoto lens I was able to zoom in close to the beach and waited from the next wave too come onshore giving three distinct variations of color.

 • Auke Recreation is about 15 miles north of downtown Juneau. On a rainy evening I headed to the beach on the shoreline which is part of the Tongass National Forest. As I stood along the beach the rain was coming and going which also brought the cloud deck low at times. This small island just off the coast was coming and going in the rain and clouds. Working with a longer shutter exposure to soften the water motion I focused on the island while protecting the lens from some of the rain which was falling.

 • I found my walking around Washington Park in Denver during Fall. As I neared Smith Lake in the park I noticed a lone leaf in the water. The wind was providing some ripples on the lake and was also slowly moving the leaf. I found my angle to capture the image (while also staying dry) and used the ripples to fill in the rest of the frame for this image.

 • Early in the morning we were out in Zodiacs exploring the giant icebergs which we came across as we sailed up Scoresby Sound and Hall Bredning. The icebergs were quite massive as we navigated through them but also keeping a safe distance in case one was to calf and/or roll. At the top of this berg you can see the birds which are flying around looking for food at the top of the ice and as we sat for a while photographing the birds continued to fly around the top and also land on the ice as well. The overcast conditions this morning provided a great backdrop for the iceberg and exploring on the waters of Hall Bredning.

 • Flowing through the waters of Greenland we found a large iceberg mass. At first glance of this piece we were unsure of the dimensions of the piece but starting to circle the iceberg we quickly found it was quite even on all sides. Most likely this piece just broke off of a glacier further up the versus some of the calving we saw in other areas just a few days earlier. At easily a couple of hundred feet tall we kept our distance to this iceberg just incase it started to shed some of the ice and then roll.
