  • It was a much different day in the Denver area today then yesterday. With cold temperatures and overcast skies I went looking for an image leading me up Lookout Mountain from Golden. Quickly I ended up in the fog which was quite thick at times. Upon reaching Windy Saddle, I stopped to see the view (which there was none) but soon noticed the frost on the trees in the area. Grabbing a long lens I photographed a tree nearby on the trail in the dwindling light just prior to sunset today. With the final day of November here, this is a reminder of winter just being around the corner.

  • While waiting for sunrise at Moraine Park in Rocky Mountain National Park during the fall a light layer of fog filled the valley. With the sounds of elk in the distance we waiting for the sun to rise. However when it did rise this is not what we were expecting. The fog diffused the sun and the rays turned orange. Turning the camera a little I was able to position myself with a tree between myself and the sun for this image as the sunlight filled the park

  • When you find a tree which has character you find yourself back to photograph it in various seasons in different conditions. On this day I found that the November sunset would go through the tree in the perspective that I have captured the tree before. It was waiting for that right moment to get the rays of the sun through the tree for this image.

  • Just before Christmas 2011 almost twelve inches of snow fell in the Denver area. As the snow was ending I headed out and photographed around town. The last stop I made was at Willis Case Golf Course in northwest Denver. The area was filled with people sledding on the fresh snow, and as I made my way out on the golf course I looked for fresh snow and trees to photograph. From a distance I spotted a tree which looked interesting in its location and when I got there found the fresh snow surrounding the area which I photographed and created this image.

  • It was a record high of 84 degrees on Sunday. It is spring in Denver. Yes, it snowed on Monday night into Tuesday producing scenes like this around the city. When I woke up Tuesday morning and looked out the window I knew I would be heading to Washington Park with my camera to photograph the tree I first found in a similar scenario on May 1, 2008. I did photograph that tree but decided to explore the park for a little while as the wet snow continued to fall. The tree above is one I first found in early 2008 and went looking for it in the snow. It was closer to my car then I remembered, which threw me off a little bit but after spending some time looking for a good angle created this image prior to heading home.

  • After a week of clear skies the rain returned for most of the week. Those times the clouds roll into Juneau it does become interesting looking at the mountains around town. As I was looking towards the Mount Roberts tram on this day the lines of trees were showing for a little while in the fog allowing me to capture this image, however just a few minutes later the fog got thicker and this tree not far way disappeared from my view.

  • One morning while walking around Sloans Lake in Denver at sunrise I noticed the shape of this tree in the distance. As I approached the tree the sun started to rise over the horizon fitting in perfectly to the scene and providing for the starburst look using a small aperture as well as the leaves on the tree to provide the effect while shooting into the sun.

  • There is a tree in Denver's Washington Park which I have photographed a handful of times. I was thinking of photographing this on my way home from picking up some film which was just processed. The late afternoon light was lighting up the remaining fall colors on a nice November day, and as I explored the different angles of the tree I decided to include the sun in this photograph as it had not been possible on the other days at Washington Park.

  • During the initial snow on Friday February 3rd, I made my way to Sloans Lake which is west of downtown. Walking around in the snow I headed to an area of trees when I saw this one along the lake. The tree next to the water with the snow still falling is what grabbed my attention. One of the items to watch while photographing in the snow is where you are walking as the trail you make could end up being in the next picture you want to take. For this image it was not an issue, and I was also careful just in case I wanted to head back later to photograph some more.

  • While driving a few years ago I was waiting for a train to cross and noticed a small reservoir northwest of Denver. The Jim Baker Reservoir is 1.4 miles around the entire lake and there were plenty of people out enjoying the nice fall day in the area. I started with photographing some rocks in the lake, but it wasn't until I was heading back to the car that I noticed the reflection of this tree in the lake.

  • In early January 2009 snow fell overnight leaving a nice winter scene. Seeing the snow start to fall on Saturday evening, I planned to wake up early to get out to Washington Park prior to sunrise and see how it had been transformed. It was quiet in the park and as I headed to a tree which I found almost a year ago a slight chill was present but the beauty of the snow covered surroundings quickly made it go away. I photographed this tree once again from the original position and prior to heading elsewhere in the park I decided to try a different view of the tree from what I had photographed before providing the image Winter in Washington Park.

  • It was five years ago today I first photographed this tree in Washington Park here in Denver. Just like five years ago it snowed today in Denver and this snow is giving us a little more than in 2008. This is indeed a new photograph of the tree as I headed to the park to photograph the tree as well as others areas in the park. The question is will this be the last snowfall of the season, at the current rate I would say most likely not.

  • December is the time of year where displays of Christmas Lights dot the landscapes of cities. While I was in Boise, Idaho I took some photographs of the state Christmas Tree at the state capitol of Idaho. In addition to some images of the tree and the capitol building, I also zoomed in to the holiday lights and played with the focus to get the above effect for the image.

  • While on a trip to Hawaii a few years ago I headed to Volcanoes National Park and on one morning headed towards the shoreline in the park. As I was descending the hill the sun started to rise and in the barren space noticed this one tree which would make a nice element to add to the image. Quickly heading over the terrain I got to this spot just as the sun was heading through the tree capturing this image.

  • Plymouth, California is about an hour southeast of Sacramento. In October 2008 I was in the area during a week long trip to northern California. Exploring some of the roads I came across this tree early one morning and thought the barbed wire and the look of the tree were complimentary in meaning.

  • An October snow storm brought close to a foot of snow to Denver. As this was in the middle of fall there were still plenty of leaves on the trees. A tree near the State Capitol was full of color which feel onto the fresh snow and brought the contrast of the seasons into light.

  • From Harbor Island in San Diego I found a tree which is silhouetted in the light just noticeable in the early morning hours of a morning in 2007.

  • On Christmas in 2014 I headed out to Golden just after the snow started falling the afternoon. Being at some friends not far from Golden I was almost there already so it seemed to be a good decision. The drive out to Golden was quite interesting as the snow was coming down fast at times with the wind blowing. Upon arriving in Golden I was treated to a fresh blanket of snow and plenty of holiday lights. As I was exploring some lights in the distance on a tree I found the bridge and later this vantage point along Clear Creek which was a great spot to capture a snowy Christmas in the Denver area.

  • Taking advantage of a large snowfall in Denver, I headed to Sloans Lake which is along the western border of Denver. Walking around the lake I noticed this flowing tree and started to photograph it with the lake in the background. I sort of laughed to myself as it does have a little similarity to the image Winter in Washington Park which I have photographed a few times before as well.

  • Grant Humphreys Mansion is located near Governors Park and as I found out after the fact the mansion is haunted. When taking the image I was thinking color all the way with the nice blue of the sky, green of the grass as well as some leaves in the tree; however with the nice contrast a change to black and white worked even better for this result.

  • On a November day in 2012, the afternoon and evening in Denver brought a mixture of rain and snow to the area. With this in mind I headed to Washington Park in Denver to photograph a tree which I have been photographed for the past few years. As I approached the park I noticed the moisture on the ground, the leaves and path leading into the park. After photographing around the lake I made my way to this area at dusk and spent some time in a new location at Washington Park.

  • Denver experienced an April snowfall which nicely mixed with the start of spring. Throughout Denver you could see snow on new blossoms or leaves which had already started to show especially with the mild March. I headed to familiar spot to photograph the tree in Washington Park which I first encountered almost four year ago in similar conditions.

  • Located about a mile east of Downtown Denver, City Park provides an opportunity to photograph the nature of the park, the skyline as well as the mountains. On this occasion, I headed to the City Park Golf Course to find a good spot to capture the scene. As I headed to a tee box on the golf course I found a tree which helped mirror the skyline which also helped frame the city.

  • Along the Front Range it is not uncommon to get a late season snowfall and as I watched the snow fall from my office window on May 1st I grabbed my camera and headed towards the park. My initial plan was to photograph at the south end of Washington Park, but as I passed by the lake and noticed the steam rising the plan quickly changed. I photographed around the lake and after almost completing a loop found this tree. By this time the snow had started to turn to rain letting the grass of spring show through the wet snow.

  • I went to the Denver Botanical Gardens during the Blossom of Lights event which is held in December each year. With an impressive display of lights in a winter setting I strolled through the gardens enjoying the holiday lights which overtook the gardens. With my camera in hand I started taking pictures of the various displays and once the last of twilight had diminished I started to try some different ways to capture the lights as in this image here which was taken looking up at a large tree filled with lights.

  • As the snow started to fall on Christmas Eve, I headed out to capture the season with some fresh snow in Denver. Making multiple stops on that evening I ended up at the Daniels & Fisher Tower along the 16th Street Mall and positioned myself in a location to capture the lighted tree as fresh snow continued to fall in the city.

  • In September 2008 while visiting Estes Park, I had planned to photograph around Bear Lake one morning. As the first hints of light appeared I was halfway up Bear Lake Road and realized I would be stuck in the clouds. Quickly thinking of some other options, I decided to risk a risk and change locations. Finding a pullout, I headed back down the road and went up Trail Ridge Road where at tree line I emerged from the clouds. Knowing Rainbow Curve was not too far away I made it to the turnoff with about 10 minutes to spare prior to sunrise.

  • A weekend snow brought me out to Cheesman Park one year to photograph around the park. As I walked through the park in the fresh snow it was pretty quiet with the exception of some dogs out in the park playing in the fresh powder. Making my way through the park I found a group of trees which sparked my interest. The falling snow helped hide the background in the park which let me capture just the trees as the focal element in this image with fresh snow.

  • When you arrive at the airport in Boise, there it states Welcome to the City of Trees as you take the escalator towards baggage claim. Prior to heading to the airport I stopped by Ann Morrison Park near the Boise River. As sunset was approaching the park was filled with people playing disc golf as well as leaves from the trees as the peak color had passed. Once again getting low to the ground to capture the grass and leaves I captured the image.

  • Over the weekend a fair amount of spring snow fell over Denver. With the warm temperatures many trees were already showing their blossoms which made for a nice scene to photograph. I headed out in the City Park area with my camera to capture some of these scenes. As I walked through the park I quickly found trees with red or white blossoms as well as trees already showing their leaves for the summer season. These colors made for an interesting contrast to the black, grey and white normally you would find in the winter.

  • I headed out for a little while and experienced a nice sunset on Bay Farm Island in Alameda, California today during a pleasant November day. This is an area I have visited before and have also enjoyed photographing the trees and the shapes they have become due to the wind along San Francisco Bay. With the nice day there were plenty of people out jogging and riding their bikes for fun as well as to/from work, with one who happened to pass by as I framed this shot for today.

  • Under a fall sky the Colorado State Capitol building rises from the shrubs and trees which surrounds the building. The lower sunlight helps reflect the gold leaf on the dome itself and highlights the image amongst the changing trees.

  • As I was walking across the Auraria Campus during the Spring an earlier dusting of snow had stopped falling and the temperatures were starting to rise. This will any snow which really accumulated on the sidewalk to melt. I had just walked down this path when I turned around to notice the scene of trees lining the walk with a hint of fresh leaves on the trees.

  • Walking from Larimer Square towards the Auraria Campus on an afternoon in Denver I noticed the reflection of Downtown Denver on one of the newest buildings on the campus. The CU Denver Student Commons Building was providing a nice frame of the city and once finding a location between a few trees across Speer Blvd I was able to capture part of the city using the framing of this building.

  • The holiday lights in downtown Denver are quite popular to view and photograph, including the City and County of Denver. I was looking for a different vantage point for this scene and as I was walking through Civic Center park noticed how it was possible to capture the lights through the trees.

  • Frost was on the grass and a little sheet of ice was on some of the ponds in Ann Morrison Park this morning. Right when you enter the park from the west there is a nicely manicured lawn which caught my eye with the frost still on the grass. Walking down the path, I noticed the lines of the trees with the walk for the picture.

  • This past weekend as the snow fell on and off all weekend I headed to near Larimer Square to photograph. Looking for an angle of the Daniel and Fisher Tower which is decorated around Christmas I came across a perspective I have not seen before while in the area. Using some trees in the area as well as the historic buildings in the foreground I zoomed in on the tower just after sunset to capture this image.

  • After an early season snowfall in the mountains the fall colors are given an extra element of fresh snow on the peaks. It had been a couple of days since a few inches of snow had fallen amongst the trees leaving just a reminder of the snow on the mountains with a crisp blue sky.

  • The columns within Civic Center Park in Denver provide many opportunities to bring them into an image of the surrounding landscape. In this image I took advantage of this and brought the Colorado State Capitol into the frame. I have done this at the southern end of the park before but this was my first time finding it on the north end of Civic Center Park. Looking at the image it is possible to do this in the summer as well once the trees fill in with leaves.

  • Fall is definitely in the air in Denver and the color is also visible along Speer Blvd. The last couple of days while driving along Speer Blvd I have noticed the changing leaves in the city with some of the trees already empty of leaves there are plenty of trees in peak color this fall. This afternoon I decided to walk around this area to capture some images of the trees near the Colorado Convention Center. Depending on the weather in the next couple of days this scene could be quite different come midweek.

  • While in Montreal during the fall there was plenty of fall foliage in full display. The various colors on the trees and ground were quite impressive. As I explored the city I came across a pond with leaves which had fallen into the water. With the moving water I used a slow shutter speed to capture a little of the movement of the leaf against the rocks on the bottom.

  • Snow was plentiful early in the winter 2012/13 season. When it finally snowed in Denver I grabbed my camera and headed out into the elements. This was the largest amount of snowfall which fell from one storm at this in the season making for much excitement to finally receive a good snowfall in the metro area. While I have some photographs of Washington Park and Sloans Lake in the snow, City Park is a park I have tried to capture in the past. Walking back to the area my car was parked I noticed the curve of the lake and trees in the elements which I thought would be the perfect opportunity to capture a winter scene in City Park to compliment the scenes from the other Denver parks.

  • On a fall afternoon in Denver I headed out to City Park to photograph at sunset. Being just past the autumnal equinox the light was still behind the city skyline as I waited for sunset. Taking advantage of this afternoon light I composed by scene and let the light flow into the background which provided a source to backlight the city as well as the trees within the park.

  • Just outside of Wrangell, Alaska I found this scene while riding Alaska Marine Highways to the south. The outcropping of trees in two instances with the ongoing water drew my attention when I took this image. Initially it was just the one instance but as the ship continued onward the second group appeared. With some little rain in the area the trees are facing the unknown in the spring in Southeast Alaska.

  • As I parked my car at Sloans Lake, I had a plan to head towards the lake. This was until I noticed the sun rising above the trees on the eastern side of the park and some frost still on the grass and leaves. Using a low perspective with a leaf for the foreground I captured this image with a different angle of view.

  • Heading back from Steamboat Springs a few years ago I made a stop on the way back along the road leading to the Flat Top Wilderness area. With a setting of aspen trees and plenty of columbine underneath I photographed in the area for a while. During this time I also played with some motion on the camera while photographing the aspen which is the image in this photograph. Using a small aperture, I was able to get a slow shutter speed which allowed me to move the camera giving this effect. It took a little while to find the right looking aspens, but the result in something which is almost three dimensional in look all created in-camera.

  • Spring in the Mile High City. This is when the leaves start to come back to life as shown on the trees outside the center on Speer. With the snowiest months in the Denver in March and April you never know when spring will truly arrive though.

  • It is not uncommon to see snow in the fall around Denver even in October. This was one of those days when a light dusting of snow fell in Denver overnight greeted with clear skies in the morning. Getting close to the ground I focused on the grass an using a shallow depth of field put the trees in the background out of focus. This allows the viewer to have a sense of place but puts the attention on the snow in the fresh spring growth.

  • You never know what to expect when spring is around in Denver, it could be 70 degrees one day and snow the next. With this variety this makes it a great time to photograph around the city as the variety in color and potential for the snow in the city or mountains remains. On this day I was photographing around City Park and decided to make my way towards the golf course where I found trees in full bloom. Using this as a foreground I framed the city of Denver behind and naturally the mountains as well for this image.

  • Spring snowstorms provide some great contrast in the Denver of winter and spring. Walking around City Park I found this group of trees showing their blossoms as the snow provided a winter covering on them. With the snow continuing the fall it wasn't long until the trees were fully covered in heavy snow on their branches. This snow didn't last long as the temperatures started to warm up again during the week quickly making the snowstorm a memory to look back at in pictures and memories.
