  • One spring I was visiting the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve near Alamosa, Colorado. I was exploring the dunes prior to the wind picking up late one afternoon. Using my wide angle lens and getting low to the surface I wanted to bring a scene which a person could easily step into the image and place themselves on the dunes.

  • When you first get to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve you can focus on the large dunes which sit in front of the Sangre de Christo Mountains. However there are also the small details which you can find as well as in this image. A line in the sand winds it way into the dunes as the afternoon sun casts a shadow.

  • As the day moves to afternoon at the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve the wind picks up. With the wind starting to blow those lines which were led to the distance start to be obscured with the blowing sand from the gusty wind. These winds are quite common at the sand dunes based on the location of the park in the Alamosa valley and is also how they initially formed.

  • What I like about this image is the abstract feel of the sand which I captured. The shallow depth of field helps obscure the real perspective of the size of the sand in the image. This allows the viewer to come to their own conclusion of the scene and allows them to interpret it in their own manner which can also change over time.

  • Located in southern Colorado the Great Sand Dunes are still slowing building as the wind blows sand and soil deposits from the Rio Grande and its tributaries. Even with the daily changes with the blowing wind the dunes remain familiar to most who visit. There are plenty of photographic opportunities in the dunes whether using black and white or color as your palette. For this photograph, it was the lines of the dunes and contrast of the blue sky which drew me to capture this image on an early morning in May 2008.

  • As you climb on Interstate 70 west from Denver you will quickly find yourself in the mountains. After climbing in elevation at the exit for Genesee you are treated to a view of the Rocky Mountains which always gets your attention. After a spring snow storm in Denver I headed up to this spot to capture the scene with snow covered mountains.

  • Over the weekend I photographed in downtown Denver. As I was walking around at the eastern side of the downtown area, I would see Union Station down 17th Avenue. I finally made my way down to the train station and took some photographs on a nice spring day. It was hard to believe almost all of the snow from a few days earlier was gone and replaced with blue skies. The area around Union Station will also change in the upcoming years as it becomes the travel hub for Denver. It should be interesting to see how the changes shape up over time.

  • If you have been by Denver International Airport in the past couple of years you have seen the new Westin Hotel being built at the south end of the main terminal building. Now that the windows are in the hotel I have noticed the nice reflection the hotel provides of the "peaks" of the airport. While waiting for luggage to arrive over the holiday travel season I headed outside with my camera to capture this reflection. There is still some work to be done on this new Westin Hotel at the airport, but we now have a good idea of what the landscape at the airport will look like moving forward.

  • A couple of years ago I photographed the roller coaster at Lakeside Amusement Park after a dusting of snow. Today I was in the area and thought about photographing the same scene without the snow. It was a nice overcast fall afternoon which allowed for some even light on the location as I prepared to take the image once again for Thirty Days. For the next few months the park will remain quiet, however soon summer will be back and the Cyclone will be traveling these tracks once more.

  • On an evening a few years ago south of the airport photographing airplanes departing, I changed my focus to the road I was parked along as I photographed some of the traffic which was passing by me. It was a clear winter evening which allowed the stars to be visible as I photographed and it wasn't until later that I noticed the similar pattern in the sky as the car was traveling past me in this image.

  • As we left the calm water of the protected fjords we encountered a couple of icebergs on their own. As we approached them we had the open oceans waters which provided a backdrop of distance in this image under overcast skies on this afternoon. I found a position which gave me a forward looking view from the vessel we were traveling in order to capture the vast surroundings and let the remaining pieces of the icebergs fill the images as the central part of the image.

  • With my recent travels to Juneau I have been asked what is it like. Well I think this image pretty much sums up an early August afternoon in Juneau. It was a full afternoon of cruise ships, and the float planes were coming back from excursions during the day. Yes it does rain in Juneau, but you also get great days like this to enjoy the Juneau and the surrounding area.

  • While traveling along the Oregon coast I made my way to Bandon, Oregon during a low tide. Walking out on the sand I was along to get close to many of the rocks along the shore on a sunny February day. One perspective I like is to get the camera close to the water as in this image. Using a wide angle I let the camera get close to the incoming wave, without trying to get the camera or myself wet at all. With the morning light, I had Face Rock along the coast here as a backdrop and finding a spot on the beach which would put the rock where I wanted it in the image. While I was judging the incoming water with the camera a small group of people were finding it fun to watch me trying to get myself and the camera dry, which was successful on this day.

  • The new Alaska State Museum reopened in Juneau in 2016. While traveling to Juneau they were constructing the new building which I was able to watch grow from the ground up during my visits there. On a November day, I was walking past the museum and noticed the reflection being case from the glass windows in front. The majority of this image is glass which is reflecting the siding of the museum which is showing a little on the right of the frame, looking carefully you can see the difference in the color between the two.

  • I headed to a park I have passed many times while traveling on Speer Blvd but never realized what it consisted of as I sped on past the park. Alamo Placita Park is one of those parks which people have seen, but never have stopped more so as it is a small neighborhood park. Even the City and County of Denver website has limited information about the park itself. Walking around the park the image I wanted to walk away with was easily the tie in to Speer and the limited knowledge of the park. As it was near sunset I first thought about the lights of cars passing by the park, but seeing this set of stairs leading into the park this was a good place to start with the traffic taking the background. At first I was going to leave this as a color image, but once the sun set the color of the stone was changed with the various color temperatures of the nearby lights so I converted it to a black and white image which I feel helps tell the story of the lesser known park as well.

  • Located on the eastern coast of Greenland is the village of Ittoqqortoormiit with a population of around 400. The village sits on the Scoresbysund which during the winter months freezes over with sea ice. The village was founded almost one hundred years ago and sits above the Arctic Circle. The buildings within the town are colorful as this image shows looking out towards the sound and a large iceberg flowing out. Initially buildings were painted colors to represent what you could find in the village as it would help out those traveling. This is no longer the case, but many nordic villages can be found with colorful buildings.
