  • The Sun Voyager sculpture sits along the water in Reykjavik, Iceland. The sculpture by sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason is described as an ode to the sun. Playing off of this name when I found myself there on an early morning I decided to bring the sun into the photograph. Finding a nice composition was the task at hand which I could then position myself to include the sun into the scene as well. By using a small depth of field (f/22) and placing the sun right at the end of the sculpture it provides the star effect in the image and also helps eliminate some of the sun glare.

  • On a rainy day I explored along the waterfront in Reykjavik spending some time photographing the Sun Voyager sculpture. On this day it was a little less crowded which allowed me to get closer and spend more time at the sculpture. As I started to looking back towards the city I noticed how Hallgrímskirkja was visible up the hill. Once I noticed this I spent time photographing the two of them together which with the rain allowed me to focus on the rain drops on the Sun Voyager as the church fell slightly out of focus in the distance.

  • While driving past the Denver Convention Center and Denver Performing Arts Center it is hard not to miss the sculpture "The Dancers". There is always a mixed reaction to this piece of art. In November 2009 while walking around photographing during a weekend snow I stopped at the piece and wanted to capture an image which would show the piece but also a sense of where it is located. Trying to minimize my tracks in the fresh snow I took a view from a distance and thought minimal colors due to the weather.

  • Underneath the Millennium Bridge is a sculpture by Australian artist Konstantin Dimopoulos. I first noticed this piece just after it was installed and made a point to go back and check it out when I was in the area again. Playing with some camera motion to bring out the lines of the sculpture was my inspiration in this photograph.

  • I was standing on the Juneau-Douglas Bridge photographing the whale sculpture and Downtown Juneau when a Holland America cruise ship departed for the day. I quickly found a view down the Gastineau Channel to capture the cruise ship in the distance with the whale in the foreground. The water feature of the whale sculpture is not constant, thus I waited a few minutes for the water to turn on again and captured this image.

  • After the City and Borough of Juneau completed the dock expansion project they added sculptures where the cruise ships use to tie up along the boardwalk. As I walked along these one evening the sun was starting to set allowing me to posting myself in a location where the sun would be behind the metal. I then used an aperture which would give me a star effect from the sun which also comes through the metal of the sculpture.

  • Outside of the Colorado Convention Center is a Big Blue Bear looking inside the facility. This piece titled I See What You Mean by artist Lawrence Argent is one which people stop to enjoy from inside and outside the convention center. I have tried to get a new perspective of this sculpture before but this morning I decided to play off of the bear peering into the convention center. Using a shallower depth of field so the bear is slightly out of focus my thought was to peer through the foliage nearby to give another perspective of the bear.

  • As I walked on the new walkway towards the Whale Sculpture in Juneau, I noticed the starfish which were at the edge of the steps of the seating area along the way. With the sunlight casting a shadow I spent a little time photographing these elements more so designed to limit skateboarding tricks on the wood. Standing above the starfish I was able to pick an angle which brought the lines through the image and also showed the face there was a step below.

  • Walking along Marina Bay in Singapore I came across the Merlion. The Merlion is a mythical creature with the head of a lion and body of a fish which is a symbol of Singapore. As Singapore is near the equator the length of golden hour or dusk is quite short and limits the amount of photographing you can do with the nice evening light. I found a spot along near the sculpture and worked to compose my image to bring in parts of the city and also show the motion of the water with a little longer exposure giving this image.

  • For all of the pieces of public art within Denver the one piece which gets a lot of discussion, after the sculpture near the airport, are The Dancers in front of the Denver Performing Arts Center along Speer Blvd. When looking at these two figures you will find a different look from any direction you view the piece which makes it interesting to photograph. This different look might even match the different views you will find on the piece as well by artist Jonathan Borofsky. If you ever have a chance to stand under the piece take that opportunity, you will be in for a treat.

  • Just outside of Arlee, Montana you will find the Garden of One Thousand Buddhas. These buddha sculptures surround the central figure in an eight spoke Dharma wheel. just to the north of this there is a small hill you can walk up which are covered in prayer flags. On the day I visited there was a little breeze which allowed the flags to move with the wind. Using a slower shutter speed I captured the colors and motion of the flags as they fluttered in the wind.
