  • While waiting for sunrise at Moraine Park in Rocky Mountain National Park during the fall a light layer of fog filled the valley. With the sounds of elk in the distance we waiting for the sun to rise. However when it did rise this is not what we were expecting. The fog diffused the sun and the rays turned orange. Turning the camera a little I was able to position myself with a tree between myself and the sun for this image as the sunlight filled the park

  • As the day moves to afternoon at the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve the wind picks up. With the wind starting to blow those lines which were led to the distance start to be obscured with the blowing sand from the gusty wind. These winds are quite common at the sand dunes based on the location of the park in the Alamosa valley and is also how they initially formed.

  • One spring I was visiting the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve near Alamosa, Colorado. I was exploring the dunes prior to the wind picking up late one afternoon. Using my wide angle lens and getting low to the surface I wanted to bring a scene which a person could easily step into the image and place themselves on the dunes.

  • In late summer 2009 I took part in a Team in Training event which included a final hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. As we reached the summit of Hallet Peak, this was the view to the west as a storm quickly began to approach the area. Noticing this we quickly begun our trek back to the trailhead but not quick enough as some precipitation started to fall including a little snow.

  • When you first get to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve you can focus on the large dunes which sit in front of the Sangre de Christo Mountains. However there are also the small details which you can find as well as in this image. A line in the sand winds it way into the dunes as the afternoon sun casts a shadow.

  • In the spring of 2009 I made by way to Rocky Mountain National Park to photograph along Trail Ridge Road. The road was still in the process of being cleared for the season and scheduled to open in less than a week. After photographing up the road a couple of miles I made my way back to my car. Noticing the road leading towards Longs Peak I put down my tripod and captured the image. With the long exposure of thirty seconds it also caught the city lights of Boulder and Denver lighting up the clouds in the distance.

  • I could have stayed in bed and continued dreaming, however I woke up early and headed to Rocky Mountain National Park and the Bear Lake area. After photographing around Bear Lake at sunrise I hike a little over a mile to Dream Lake. As usual there was a stiff wind, and once I got to Dream Lake it just started to howl. I didn't spend much time around the lake, as this was also a scouting mission for future trips towards Dream Lake later this winter.

  • Just before the Memorial Weekend holiday in 2009, I headed to Rocky Mountain National Park. It takes a while to plow Trail Ridge Road and open it once again for the season as it tops out over 12,000 feet, however usually by Memorial Day Weekend it is open again connecting Estes Park with Grand Lake. While they are working on clearing the road you can park and walk up the road, on this evening I did just that and after walking a few miles still didn't come across the plows just the work they left behind. A clean road and tall banks of snow.

  • In September 2008 while visiting Estes Park, I had planned to photograph around Bear Lake one morning. As the first hints of light appeared I was halfway up Bear Lake Road and realized I would be stuck in the clouds. Quickly thinking of some other options, I decided to risk a risk and change locations. Finding a pullout, I headed back down the road and went up Trail Ridge Road where at tree line I emerged from the clouds. Knowing Rainbow Curve was not too far away I made it to the turnoff with about 10 minutes to spare prior to sunrise.

  • What I like about this image is the abstract feel of the sand which I captured. The shallow depth of field helps obscure the real perspective of the size of the sand in the image. This allows the viewer to come to their own conclusion of the scene and allows them to interpret it in their own manner which can also change over time.

  • Located in southern Colorado the Great Sand Dunes are still slowing building as the wind blows sand and soil deposits from the Rio Grande and its tributaries. Even with the daily changes with the blowing wind the dunes remain familiar to most who visit. There are plenty of photographic opportunities in the dunes whether using black and white or color as your palette. For this photograph, it was the lines of the dunes and contrast of the blue sky which drew me to capture this image on an early morning in May 2008.

  • Setting up at dusk one evening in September I waited for traffic to pass by my spot on the side of the bridge. The bridge is located at the west side of Glacier National Park as you cross the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. Being so late in the evening, there were few cars and those were leaving the National Park after spending the day enjoying the many offerings you can find at Glacier.

  • I had driven past this location in Glacier National Park many times while in the park in 2007 as well as the winter of 2008. However after some rain, the stream picked up speed a little bit and allowed me to capture this during my last visit to the park. As I stood on the side of the road a few people stopped to see what I was photographing, and were upset there was not an animal in the scene.

  • In the winter of 2008 I was at Glacier National Park photographing and enjoying the scenery. After a day of snowshoeing up the road I was heading back and stopped at the west end of Lake McDonald just after sunset. As the night settled in I captured the quiet winter evening in the park which is quite different then being there in the summer.

  • This was also taken a few summers ago in Glacier National Park and not far from where I saw the baby mountain goat. Looking to the east on the Hidden Lake trail in mid-July there were still patches of snow around Logan Pass and the trail took us over some of those patches as well. Now that fall is here the park will start to close down at the higher elevations as the snow will soon start to fly in northern Montana.

  • If you have driven Going to the Sun Road and stopped at Logan Pass you most likely have run into the mountain goats which hang out there in the summer. As I was walking with a group of friends to Hidden Lake from Logan Pass, we ran into a family of mountain goats. This little one stayed just for a little bit for some pictures prior to heading towards a location with less people, but not before saying Welcome to Glacier National Park.

  • Lassen National Park is located a few hours north of Sacramento. The park contains the southern-most volcano in the Cascade Range which is Lassen Peak. Throughout the park you will find still active mud pots and other types of activity. I stopped in the park in late 2009 while on a road trip from Sacramento to Denver with a friend. Even in the short time we stopped at the park it was an interesting site to see in the fall and is on my list of places to visit again.

  • This was taken at Glacier National Park in Montana. Just for a change I transformed it to a black and white image which I think tells a little different story in comparison with the original image in color. With the rocks leading us out to the lake and onwards to the mountains it is not a mixture of colors but something which blends the scene together as one just after sunset on this evening.

  • In February 2008 I headed to the Glacier area for a few days of photographing and ventured into the park some of those days. The park is quite different in the winter with just a small portion of road open in the park, and the number of people you see being counted on two hands however it is quite magnificent. This image was an afternoon at Lake McDonald looking towards Stanton Mountain on some fresh snow which wasn't hard to find at all, well minus the fresh powder with animal tracks I encountered just after this location.

  • The old lighthouse in Cabrillo National Monument sits on top of the park, however there is plenty of more to do from whale watching in the winter, checking out the tide pools on the west side of the park or checking out the skyline of San Diego. Due to the location of the park it closes at 5:00 PM, which means the nice light you will find for photography is limited to a few months of the year.

  • In 2008 I headed to Glacier National Park and explored the park in the winter months. This is quite different than in the summer due to much less of the park open and the numbers of visitors quite less at this time. On this day I believe I saw around 10 people in the park while exploring on snowshoes. Lake McDonald is pictured in this image from the shoreline just prior to sunset on a pleasant day to explore Glacier.

  • I did a day trip to Seward and when there either a cruise to Kenai Fjords National Park or a visit to Exit Glacier should be on your list. I just had time for the latter so I headed to the only part of the park accessible by car. From the parking lot I walked along the trail and up the rocky path to see the glacier. Along the way there are signs showing the change in location of the glacier itself over the years. When heading down the trail I was treated to this view of the runoff from the glacier and the clouds hanging onto the mountains on a rainy Alaska day.

  • You may not know it but the entrance into Glacier National Park once went over the Belton Bridge as seen in this image. The Belton Bridge was built in 1920 and for a couple of decades was the method to get visitors over the Flathead River from Highway 2 into the park. Now this is a walkway over the river and a quiet location you can watch rafters pass below or just relax. During a winter visit I found pristine snow in this location which made for a fun place to photograph along the water. I found this spot looking back towards the bridge and the snow covered mountains in the distance.

  • While on a trip to Hawaii a few years ago I headed to Volcanoes National Park and on one morning headed towards the shoreline in the park. As I was descending the hill the sun started to rise and in the barren space noticed this one tree which would make a nice element to add to the image. Quickly heading over the terrain I got to this spot just as the sun was heading through the tree capturing this image.

  • On a November evening I headed to North Douglas and a vantage point that I knew you could see the Chilkat Range in the distance. Once again under a moonlight evening I used a long exposure to capture the scene. The stars you see in this image do not do it justice for what I saw just a 15 minute drive from downtown Juneau. From this vantage point the mountains are the boundary between the Lynn Canal and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve.

  • From the back of the M/V Ocean Nova I watched the sunset as we sailed south through the a fjord in the Northeast Greenland National Park. The layers of the rocks and water itself helped ground the image to provide a sense of place with the orange sky during dusk which also lit up the only clouds I saw on this day. While this was in early September, it would only be a couple of months until this area is frozen over with sea ice for the winter.

  • Glacier National Park is quite the different spot to visit in the winter months. Over a course of a few days I came across many variations in the weather which made it fun to explore as well as photograph. This morning at Lake McDonald is was quite foggy which gave a different then the view quite common across the lake. Using the conditions I spent a good amount of time photographing from the shoreline and capturing the mood.
