• March along the Inside Passage of Alaska and British Columbia can bring various types of weather. As the Malaspina sailed south towards Bellingham I encountered great weather for the majority of the trip. This allowed for some nice sunrises along the way. As I made my way to the front of the vessel along British Columbia I watched the sun rise onto the bow of the boat. This was a great start to the day of watching the scenic landscapes all around.

 • On Thanksgiving morning this past year I headed to the Lake Merritt area near downtown Oakland to capture the city prior to sunrise. For most of the years I have been doing the Thirty Days Project, I have photographed first thing in the morning the skyline where I was on Thanksgiving Day to allow me to spend time with family the rest of the day. This morning while along the lake there was already a steady number of runners and walkers out for their morning exercise.

 • For the first morning of 2014 I headed out to photograph the skyline of Denver as I have done the past couple of years. This morning there was a system which was moving through which prevented a colorful sunrise as we have had the past couple of years. It was still nice to get out and watch the first morning of the year start with Denver as a backdrop. As I left the location some snowflakes were present as well.

 • A couple of years ago I headed to City Park to capture the morning light in the park. This morning it turned to be foggy in the park and provided a new perspective to capture the city skyline through the park. While the fog provided a new perspective it was also the morning dew rising from the grass which drew me in to this image as well.

 • From Harbor Island in San Diego I found a tree which is silhouetted in the light just noticeable in the early morning hours of a morning in 2007.

 • Walking through Havana in the morning you can watch the city come to life. Just after sunrise I was along the Malecon and came across a group of men who were fishing prior to heading to their daily jobs. This was a common site along the seawall most mornings. As I was capturing the scene a cruise ship entered the harbor for the day bring an additional splash of color to this scene.

 • In March of 2013 after a Saturday snowstorm I headed to Sloans Lake in Denver to photograph at sunrise. When I got to the lake in below freezing temperatures the steam was rising from the lake. Positioning myself for sunrise I wait to the morning light to pick up more of this steam with the City of Denver in the background from just west of downtown.

 • Frost was on the grass and a little sheet of ice was on some of the ponds in Ann Morrison Park this morning. Right when you enter the park from the west there is a nicely manicured lawn which caught my eye with the frost still on the grass. Walking down the path, I noticed the lines of the trees with the walk for the picture.

 • I headed out to a pier near downtown Juneau to capture the early morning light prior to sunrise. With sunrise almost 8:00am it doesn't require that early of a wake-up call but still enough to get the pre-dawn light. As I have mentioned before outside of the cruise ship season it is definitely a different city.

 • The weather turned a little over night and the morning was filled with some rain and more so wind along the San Diego coast. After photographing in La Jolla I headed down to Mission Beach and found a street light along the boardwalk which was still on even though the sun had been up for about an hour. With the overcast conditions, it was a different type of photography today and took advantage of this to capture the following image.

 • Glacier National Park is quite the different spot to visit in the winter months. Over a course of a few days I came across many variations in the weather which made it fun to explore as well as photograph. This morning at Lake McDonald is was quite foggy which gave a different then the view quite common across the lake. Using the conditions I spent a good amount of time photographing from the shoreline and capturing the mood.

 • It had been a while since I went to the Union Station area with my camera thus I headed to Lower Downtown on a nice November morning. As I walked down 17th towards Union Station I noticed the sun was heading right down the street and lighting the building directly. Positioning myself in front of the of the flag post on Wynkoop Street I pointed my camera upward and captured the flowing flag with the facade of the building.

 • It was a November morning with some rain in Juneau. I headed back to Douglas but this time Sandy Beach.

It was just past low tide so there was still plenty of open area to walk around on the beach with the rain falling. After about a quarter mile I reached the Pump House which brought water into the mining area of Treadwell. Looking down the channel there was nice layering as I photographed between the pilings and the line between them for drying fish.

 • The start of a new year is usually marked by sleeping in late due to the celebration from the prior night heading into the early hours of January 1st. To start off 2012, I fought the urge to sleep in and woke up in time to capture the first sunrise over Denver. As I waited for the sun to rise it was obvious people were still heading home after a long night, however like myself they were treated to the clouds lighting this first morning of 2012.

 • While driving around, I came across this beach with plenty of interesting rocks. As the level of the waves was changing, the challenge was to find a location where the tripod would be steady and not impacted with the incoming waves. After capturing the scene and heading back to the hotel for a little nap, I then continued to enjoy a nice week of vacation on Maui.

 • While visiting San Diego a few years ago, I made a pre-sunrise trip to La Jolla Cove. One of the things I noticed was the motion of the water coming in and the rock which was being covered on each iteration. Using the low light to my advantage I was able to use a slower shutter speed on my camera and capture the motion from the water in the image.

 • Snow was plentiful early in the winter 2012/13 season. When it finally snowed in Denver I grabbed my camera and headed out into the elements. This was the largest amount of snowfall which fell from one storm at this in the season making for much excitement to finally receive a good snowfall in the metro area. While I have some photographs of Washington Park and Sloans Lake in the snow, City Park is a park I have tried to capture in the past. Walking back to the area my car was parked I noticed the curve of the lake and trees in the elements which I thought would be the perfect opportunity to capture a winter scene in City Park to compliment the scenes from the other Denver parks.

 • It was a summer morning on Abaco in the Bahamas. With a quiet morning I headed out in the early morning to find another photographer already at Sunrise Point. For the span of thirty minutes we watched the skies lighten and the sun rise and then quickly go behind the clouds for start of another nice day.

 • Driving down a dirt road outside of Missoula, Montana on a fall morning I passed through an area of fog. As I emerged from the fog, I noticed a small barn in a field on the left side of the road. I stopped to photograph the small barn and when walking up the road for a different angle noticed an area by a gate where you could look down the length of the fence. As I composed this image, the early morning light started to glow as it passed through the fog providing the magically light found in this image. Prior to leaving Missoula I would visit the spot a handful of times but was never able to recreate this morning.

 • While out photographing on a morning with marine layer in the San Diego area, I headed to Harbor Island which is along San Diego Bay. As I was photographing the morning and what there was of the light I noticed the person in the above image heading away from the city. Not being at a good location at the time I just wrote of that opportunity. However about 15 minutes later I saw them heading back towards the downtown area of San Diego and found a location to capture them in the morning light with the skyline in the background as well.

 • Walking around Denver this morning on a cool clear morning I was looking for something I have not noticed before while working around in the city. I found there is plenty of items which fall into this category but not just with the new construction happening at this time. This morning I noticed the light was mostly straight down the the numbered streets in the downtown area (if you are not familiar with downtown Denver they run on a SE/NW direction).

I took advantage of this direct light on Union Station and other buildings, but as I was walking back towards my car I spotted the strong sun on the above image. With street construction in the area, I was able to stand in a recently paved area which was still closed to traffic and capture this image.

 • On many mornings while I was in Havana I would walk the streets as each day was beginning. In any city it is quite different of the morning activities as people start their day. From children heading to school, businesses opening up and people walking towards their jobs. This morning as I headed towards the capital of Cuba I found myself on a street leading directly to the capitol which I was able to capture with the cars on a one way street heading towards the building.

 • During the 2010 Rock 'N Roll marathon in Denver, I found myself in lower downtown photographing some of the runners as well as the early morning light. As I prepared for the runners to come past Union Station, I saw the first signs of light starting to shine on the sign at the train station capturing this scene under blue skies on a chilly morning.

 • Early in the morning we were out in Zodiacs exploring the giant icebergs which we came across as we sailed up Scoresby Sound and Hall Bredning. The icebergs were quite massive as we navigated through them but also keeping a safe distance in case one was to calf and/or roll. At the top of this berg you can see the birds which are flying around looking for food at the top of the ice and as we sat for a while photographing the birds continued to fly around the top and also land on the ice as well. The overcast conditions this morning provided a great backdrop for the iceberg and exploring on the waters of Hall Bredning.

 • During a recent trip to Skagway, I was walking around the town and near the harbor instead of looking up at the mountains in the area, I was looking down to see what the stillness of the morning was showing in the harbor. At first it was a reflection of a mountain in the distance I noticed, then it was the piers in the harbor which were lining up perfectly in order in this reflection image. Not too long after I took this image, a couple of seals poked their heads up in this same area and a small crowd gathered to watch them enjoy the morning in the harbor.

 • On a recent trip to Maui, I made the trek up Haleakala for sunrise at 10,000 feet. There was a caravan of cars up the mountain in the early morning hours of my first morning in Hawaii. Using the time difference to my advantage, I went early in my trip as my body was still three hours ahead. Once getting to the top it was a little bit brisk with a constant wind as well, there is not a place to be wearing shorts and flip flops as you wait for the sun to rise. I picked out a location up a little path and set up my tripod starting to photography the stars as I waited for the sun to rise. The image for today is a pre-dawn shot and with a longer shutter speed was able to capture some of the movement of the clouds just below me. Once the sun rose it was time for a little exploring prior heading back to Kaanapali and some time at the pool.

 • On my final day on the North Shore of Oahu, I woke up early to make my way towards the Banzai Pipeline. As the early hint of light started to appear in the sky, I knew Sunset Beach Park would be my destination. Using a long exposure and the morning light, the magic of this location is discovered in a simple photograph. On this morning as I photographed the changing skies and weather it proved to be a lasting reminder of my visit to Oahu.

 • An overcast morning can lead to creativity while photographing, which was the case on this morning in Hawaii. The overcast skies allows for some longer shutter motion and with that you can give a scene a different feeling. With the water moving along these rocks on Oahu the water turns into almost a fog on the rocks as it climbs and recedes on them in a quick fashion just after sunrise.

 • On a quiet November morning, I headed to the other side of Alameda near Grand Harbor and photographed the harbor with Oakland in the distance. It was a still morning with some clouds in the area this year, and as I was photographing this a few boaters were heading to the boat ramp to start the day.

 • On Thanksgiving morning a few years ago, I drove to Coronado and took some images after battling the temptation to sleep in that morning with the sound of heavy rain heard against the window as my alarm went off before sunrise. After debating for a while, I decided to grab the rain jacket and head on out to photograph. Battling waves of heavy rain which would last a few minutes I took some pictures of the San Diego skyline. One thing I noticed at the Coronado Ferry Landing was how the skyline reflected on a restaurant where workers were inside cleaning and getting ready for Thanksgiving customers mixing the location as well as the holiday for the image.

 • I started the day by photography the San Francisco skyline from Bay Farm Island and while driving back I noticed the sun rising through the Chuck Corica Golf Course in Alameda. With the morning mist in the area filtering the light I quickly found a parking spot and captured images of the scene as the started to rise. After about 10 minutes the scene changed from what first caught my eye on this quiet morning in the East Bay.

 • On a summer morning in Boston I went for a walk along the Charles River. After crossing the Longfellow Bridge I walked along the north side by MIT when I noticed the colors on these small sailboats. With the morning calm the boats and their color reflected in the water as I used the edge to separate the image on a diagonal, bringing a little tension into the scene.

 • During a visit to Missoula in 2009 I headed up to Lolo Pass on the Montana/Idaho state line along Route 12 with a small group of photographers/friends to capture some of the morning light. In the July morning a nice layer of dew drops were present around the area near the pass which I photographed for quite some time before moving on to other subjects in the area.

 • I have probably walked past the Denver Art Museum over 100 times and on a dreary November day, I once again walked by this building. As I was photographing in the area with overcast skies I noticed a view of the museum I had not captured in the past. The intersecting lines of the building caught my eye here with a small portion of the sky on this morning.

 • A nice November morning brought me to the area around the Colorado Convention Center and the Denver Performing Arts Complex. • A new year has begun and I took the opportunity to photograph the first sunrise of 2013 in Denver. Heading to a familiar location I set up my camera and waited in the chilly conditions. I was watching the weather in the days leading up to the new year and it appeared the weather which brought a light dusting of snow on the last morning of 2012 would move on and clearing would start overnight. This was exactly the case as the sun lit up the clouds for a couple of minutes during the first sunrise for the year over the skyline of Denver.

 • When visiting Maui an earlier morning is definitely worth it even if you are on vacation. The drive to the top of Haleakala can be a long one especially if you are on the western side of Maui. However when you get to the top and experience the cool temperatures and in most instances the sun rising over the clouds you will know you have made the right choice. You can always head to the beach or pool and take a nap when you get back to where you are staying.

 • It was an interesting morning weather wise as some change is in the air. Over the city there was clouds but as you looked out towards the mountains it was blue sky. Walking around Civic Center Park I headed up the steps of the Colorado State Capitol and was treated with a nice view of the mountains with still some fall color in the area.

 • Outside of the Colorado Convention Center is a Big Blue Bear looking inside the facility. This piece titled I See What You Mean by artist Lawrence Argent is one which people stop to enjoy from inside and outside the convention center. I have tried to get a new perspective of this sculpture before but this morning I decided to play off of the bear peering into the convention center. Using a shallower depth of field so the bear is slightly out of focus my thought was to peer through the foliage nearby to give another perspective of the bear.

 • I have captured sunrise over Denver from Sloans Lake many times. On this morning with the difference in temperature between the water and the air steam formed right at sunrise but soon burned off as the sun climbed in the sky. Just as I was about to leave this location, a flock of birds flew into the frame for a few seconds which I was able to capture.

 • While traveling along the Oregon coast I made my way to Bandon, Oregon during a low tide. Walking out on the sand I was along to get close to many of the rocks along the shore on a sunny February day. One perspective I like is to get the camera close to the water as in this image. Using a wide angle I let the camera get close to the incoming wave, without trying to get the camera or myself wet at all. With the morning light, I had Face Rock along the coast here as a backdrop and finding a spot on the beach which would put the rock where I wanted it in the image. While I was judging the incoming water with the camera a small group of people were finding it fun to watch me trying to get myself and the camera dry, which was successful on this day.

 • It was an early June morning as I made my way to Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge just south of Missoula. As the early light made its way through the light fog in the valley I found an interesting shoreline to capture the soft light as well as the reflection on the quiet ponds.

 • The early morning light drew me in for this image. As I walked through a small town I noticed this light on the bench sitting along the wall. Using the low angle of the light I able to position the bench so the shadow continued to flow into the image. The illuminated while wall help provide some negative space of the scene so your eye follows the bench into the image and out along the sidewalk.

 • As I walked through Caras Park in Missoula, Montana one morning while visiting there was a storm which was starting to move into the city. • It was a quiet morning along La Jolla Cove in Southern California. As I looked down at the sand in the cover I notice the rock in the sand. The water would come up to and past the rock and then recede back to the ocean. After noticing this for a little bit I set up my tripod to capture this with a long exposure. Using a long exposure with water will smooth it but also as it moves in an area without water give it a little ghostly effect. The timing of the exposure was what I was concerned in when I took this image and how the water would show in the frame.

 • It had been clear in Juneau for quite a few days in a row so I took advantage of this and headed to Sandy Beach to photograph the Treadwell Mine Pump House. In the winter sunrise will happen down the Gastineau Channel which allows the sunrise color to fall behind the pump house which I captured just prior to the start of winter. On this morning, low tide had just occurred at 1.2′ and it was starting to head towards the 20.1′ just after lunch.
• As I was walking past the State Capitol I decided to stop and capture an image of the sunset. I have used this perspective in the past couple of years to capture the change of seasons as well as the morning light against the Rocky Mountains. With the sun setting to the southeast this time of year it allowed a little of a gradient of the darkening evening skies framed by the architecture of the building itself.

 • While there is no shortage of locations to photograph in the metro Denver area, it is also nice to revisit locations you have been to before to photograph the same scene in different light or even challenge yourself to find something to have not seen in the past. The latter is what happened last week while walking through Civic Center Park in the middle of Denver. After a brief morning snowfall in the area I was out and about to capture some scenes and became focused on the columns at the north end of the park. Instead of bringing in the surrounding park, I just kept my camera on the columns and minimize any other distractions out there.

 • As I spent the fall in Missoula, Montana I had climbed the hill next to the University of Montana many morning to photograph the fall colors. • Located in Western Montana, Missoula is a little then the eastern part of the state. While living there for a few months during the fall I hiked up part of the hill to the east of the city to capture the fall colors changing around the University of Montana. • The view of Denver from the northeast is not a common angle you see of the city. On a summer morning I headed to a park in Uptown to photograph the skyline of the city. • Near one of the longest days of the year in 2011 in terms of sunlight, I headed out for some early morning photography in the Denver area with a group of photographers. As we stood on the corner of 17th and Broadway, I noticed the reflection of Republic Plaza and after moving back and forth along the curb came up with the above composition. For the next few hours we explored just outside the downtown area and some of the great architecture new and old which can be found in Denver.

 • The Sun Voyager sculpture sits along the water in Reykjavik, Iceland. The sculpture by sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason is described as an ode to the sun. Playing off of this name when I found myself there on an early morning I decided to bring the sun into the photograph. Finding a nice composition was the task at hand which I could then position myself to include the sun into the scene as well. By using a small depth of field (f/22) and placing the sun right at the end of the sculpture it provides the star effect in the image and also helps eliminate some of the sun glare.

 • After a few days of snow a the clouds cleared and nice sunny day was provided for the Juneau area. With this change I headed towards the Shrine of St. Therese to capture some images along Lynn Canal. Earlier in the month with higher winds there were people out surfing near the shrine, however with the lower waves on this day the surfers were not able to take advantage of the sunshine. While exploring the area around the shrine I found some fresh snow still along the water low sun providing some late morning light.

 • It is not uncommon to see snow in the fall around Denver even in October. This was one of those days when a light dusting of snow fell in Denver overnight greeted with clear skies in the morning. Getting close to the ground I focused on the grass an using a shallow depth of field put the trees in the background out of focus. This allows the viewer to have a sense of place but puts the attention on the snow in the fresh spring growth.

 • I took a quick walk along the harbor and Gastineau Channel this morning prior to flying out. It had been quite foggy during the week but on this day the clouds did lift a little and even a sucker hole or two appeared.
The harbor is an integral part of Juneau as during the summer months thousands of people arrive daily to visit the city from the various cruise ships which stop here. This image is looking at one of the transitions from the harbor to downtown and then onward to Douglas Island on a quiet November day in Juneau.

 • Located in southern Colorado the Great Sand Dunes are still slowing building as the wind blows sand and soil deposits from the Rio Grande and its tributaries. Even with the daily changes with the blowing wind the dunes remain familiar to most who visit. There are plenty of photographic opportunities in the dunes whether using black and white or color as your palette. For this photograph, it was the lines of the dunes and contrast of the blue sky which drew me to capture this image on an early morning in May 2008.

 • In September 2008 while visiting Estes Park, I had planned to photograph around Bear Lake one morning. As the first hints of light appeared I was halfway up Bear Lake Road and realized I would be stuck in the clouds. Quickly thinking of some other options, I decided to risk a risk and change locations. Finding a pullout, I headed back down the road and went up Trail Ridge Road where at tree line I emerged from the clouds. Knowing Rainbow Curve was not too far away I made it to the turnoff with about 10 minutes to spare prior to sunrise.

 • In early November the latest sunrise of the year in Denver takes place. Sunrise was at 7:32 AM MDT, tomorrow sunrise is at 6:33 AM MST due to the end of Daylight Saving Time.
When I arrived at a popular location to photograph Denver I noticed there were clouds to the east of downtown Denver. The key with the clouds is if they are thick are thin clouds which will light up just prior to sunrise. I got lucky this morning with vibrant color for a couple of minutes providing this look of downtown Denver.

 • A city can reveal many things by the style and manner in which it was constructed. In Denver one morning a few years ago I noticed a different look then what was expected in the reflection from one building. The result of the change brought additional character to the skyline and different thoughts of what it creates over time to the modern city.

 • One morning while walking around Sloans Lake in Denver at sunrise I noticed the shape of this tree in the distance. As I approached the tree the sun started to rise over the horizon fitting in perfectly to the scene and providing for the starburst look using a small aperture as well as the leaves on the tree to provide the effect while shooting into the sun.

 • It was a record high of 84 degrees on Sunday. It is spring in Denver. Yes, it snowed on Monday night into Tuesday producing scenes like this around the city. When I woke up Tuesday morning and looked out the window I knew I would be heading to Washington Park with my camera to photograph the tree I first found in a similar scenario on May 1, 2008. I did photograph that tree but decided to explore the park for a little while as the wet snow continued to fall. The tree above is one I first found in early 2008 and went looking for it in the snow. It was closer to my car then I remembered, which threw me off a little bit but after spending some time looking for a good angle created this image prior to heading home.

 • A lot of change has taken place around Union Station in Denver. During the changes at the train station, I headed that direction in the evening for some photography. A few mornings I have driven past the location of the new canopy over the platforms outside the train station and this was on my mind today as I looked around the area. From this perspective the repeating lines and the contrast against the dark sky drew my attention.

 • In early January 2009 snow fell overnight leaving a nice winter scene. Seeing the snow start to fall on Saturday evening, I planned to wake up early to get out to Washington Park prior to sunrise and see how it had been transformed. It was quiet in the park and as I headed to a tree which I found almost a year ago a slight chill was present but the beauty of the snow covered surroundings quickly made it go away. I photographed this tree once again from the original position and prior to heading elsewhere in the park I decided to try a different view of the tree from what I had photographed before providing the image Winter in Washington Park.
