  • While photographing from the beach in Vik, some stacks from the sea caught my eye. From my position the sun was behind the stacks thus I opted to get creative with my image. I found a spot which showed the stacks well and let them go to shadow as I also zoomed out a little to capture a large portion of sky. What this did is let the stacks position themselves into the right bottom of the frame and give plenty of negative or open space in the image allowing a minimal composition.

  • The Sun Voyager sculpture sits along the water in Reykjavik, Iceland. The sculpture by sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason is described as an ode to the sun. Playing off of this name when I found myself there on an early morning I decided to bring the sun into the photograph. Finding a nice composition was the task at hand which I could then position myself to include the sun into the scene as well. By using a small depth of field (f/22) and placing the sun right at the end of the sculpture it provides the star effect in the image and also helps eliminate some of the sun glare.

  • While driving past the Denver Convention Center and Denver Performing Arts Center it is hard not to miss the sculpture "The Dancers". There is always a mixed reaction to this piece of art. In November 2009 while walking around photographing during a weekend snow I stopped at the piece and wanted to capture an image which would show the piece but also a sense of where it is located. Trying to minimize my tracks in the fresh snow I took a view from a distance and thought minimal colors due to the weather.

  • While there is no shortage of locations to photograph in the metro Denver area, it is also nice to revisit locations you have been to before to photograph the same scene in different light or even challenge yourself to find something to have not seen in the past. The latter is what happened last week while walking through Civic Center Park in the middle of Denver. After a brief morning snowfall in the area I was out and about to capture some scenes and became focused on the columns at the north end of the park. Instead of bringing in the surrounding park, I just kept my camera on the columns and minimize any other distractions out there.

  • Walking around Olympic Stadium in Montreal I noticed the light on the metal buildings as they reflected the midday light. Working from different angles I was able to position the buildings overlapping with a nice blue sky to add to this minimal photograph of the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium.

  • As I was heading home from the airport I noticed the minimal clouds over the mountains and thought it could be an interesting sunset over Denver as I heard had been the case the past couple of days. It was a quick turnaround from when I got home to making it out to City Park in Denver. Upon arriving at the park I found a location on the golf course (watching out for golfers on this warm November day) and waited for sunset to occur. At first it appeared the clouds may be a little better north of my location but just after that thought this occurred making it a great sunset over the Mile High City of Denver.
