• As I was exploring Hong Kong by foot one day I glanced from one of the skywalks and noticed the roofline at the Hong Kong Train Station. The lines and pattens is what caught my eye initially and I worked to find a nice angle to photograph the architectural element on this building. Using a long lens I was able to zoom in and only capture the roof creating a different image than include the surrounding areas.

 • At the end of April 2013, I headed out to the plains to see how the growth was coming along for some future ideas for photographs. During the scouting I came across some fields with fresh growth and those with contrasting color. As I stood on the side of the road I worked with this concept and while moving the camera captured the fields before me. As I head back to this area in the summer it will be interesting to see how the fields change of the course of the growing season.

 • While driving past the Denver Convention Center and Denver Performing Arts Center it is hard not to miss the sculpture "The Dancers". There is always a mixed reaction to this piece of art. In November 2009 while walking around photographing during a weekend snow I stopped at the piece and wanted to capture an image which would show the piece but also a sense of where it is located. Trying to minimize my tracks in the fresh snow I took a view from a distance and thought minimal colors due to the weather.

 • As I was walking through Denver in the late afternoon of November day, I noticed how the afternoon light was casting itself amongst some of the buildings. Near the Denver Library I have always noticed the lines in this building not far away and positioned myself to catch the vertical lines this afternoon with the late afternoon light. Some of the clouds in the sky are reflecting in the glass and if you look carefully on the right you can also capture some of the insides of the building through the clear glass.

 • Connecting the Commons Park area of the city with Lower Downtown is the Denver Millennium Bridge. Dedicated in 2002, this bridge has drawn much use as well as many individuals photographing the cable-stayed bridge. One evening I headed towards the area to photograph with another photographer and even though it was a moon lit evening noticed the contrast between the mast and cables with the dark evening sky. Finding an angle to just bring in as much of the bridge and not the surrounding buildings was the end results of the Lines in the Night.

 • What I like about this image is the abstract feel of the sand which I captured. The shallow depth of field helps obscure the real perspective of the size of the sand in the image. This allows the viewer to come to their own conclusion of the scene and allows them to interpret it in their own manner which can also change over time.

 • During Doors Open Denver I was able to get higher up in the D&F Clock Tower in Downtown Denver. As I photographed from this location I noticed the black and white verticals and horizontals in a building nearby. While taking the image I immediately thought of converting this to black and white as to not let the reflection of another building and the sky to take away from the primary building.

 • While visiting Vancouver exploring the city I photographed some of the city and one thing which I found interest in was the roof line of Canada Place. When first viewing the roof is reminded me of Denver International Airport however the lines at both are a little different. This image was taken from a distance capturing just the roof of the building and the lines and patterns it creates on the Vancouver waterfront.

 • As I approached the Museum of Liverpool with overcast skies I was immediately taken in with the exterior of the building and how well it worked along the River Mersey. I first went into the building to learn more about Liverpool itself prior to photographing the building with the many angles it provided. For this image I zoomed into the building and let the lines take control of the image with the repeating lines and patterns throughout the image.

 • There has been a great amount of growth and building in Hudson Yards at New York. As I walked the Highline Canal I noticed the lines of these two buildings. The glass reflecting the background building while post showing their vertical lines caught my eye in this image.

 • As I was walking along the Freedom Trail in Boston I looked down a small side street and noticed the facade of the Post Office in Boston. The narrow street with a slight curve allowed me to get a great perspective of the lines on this building. I almost kept walking past the building but decided to stop and capture an image of the building itself. With the long lines, I choose to photograph this as a vertical allowing the viewer to get the sense of scale of this building built in the 1930's.

 • The patterns of Harpa in Reykjavik are quite interesting. With the layers of glass just moving a little will give you a different perspective of the building with the varying lines. As I moved around the building I looked at the different compositions with not only the materials of the building but also how the light hit the building during the course of the day. In this image I was working on the repeating lines and patterns which exist on the building and stacking them upon each other.

 • Walking around the Ground Zero area in the Financial District of New York the lines of the Oculus caught my attention. The Oculus is the new transportation hub in that area and is a great looking building. With my camera I zoomed into areas of the structure to capture the abstract shapes the lines created within the building.

 • I have walked past the Governor's Mansion in Denver many times and have always noticed the lines of the fence which surrounds the location. One fall the colors were vivid still from the last fall color in the city. Using a shallow depth of field I focused on the brick post and let the lines lead to the color in the background.

 • The High Line is a popular walking path on the western side of Manhattan. On a recent trip to New York City I was on the path with my camera enjoying the nice day and photographing while making my way south. Being above the street level provides some different perspectives and this time I was trying to capture something new from previous visits. Not too far along the way I noticed the lines on this building and took some photos using a longer lens to get close to the facade of the building and fill the frame.

 • A lot of change has taken place around Union Station in Denver. During the changes at the train station, I headed that direction in the evening for some photography. A few mornings I have driven past the location of the new canopy over the platforms outside the train station and this was on my mind today as I looked around the area. From this perspective the repeating lines and the contrast against the dark sky drew my attention.

 • I have probably walked past the Denver Art Museum over 100 times and on a dreary November day, I once again walked by this building. As I was photographing in the area with overcast skies I noticed a view of the museum I had not captured in the past. The intersecting lines of the building caught my eye here with a small portion of the sky on this morning.

 • One of the big events of 2014 was the opening of Union Station after years of construction in the area. With the building transformed into a transportation hub it has attracted many visitors during the second half of the year. The architecture of the canopy over the tracks is quite interesting and on a sunny day I headed down to this area. As I looked up I noticed the lines of the canopy and how they tell a different story from the location you look at them within the Union Station area. I found a spot which would give me the repeating rows as well as a view of the sky in this image which I am sure won't be one of the last I take from this area.

 • Greenland is not just about the icebergs and glaciers, but also the geology of the landscape. As you sail through the fjords this is quite apparent looking at the majestic landscape which surrounds you. As the glaciers have retreated it exposes the texture and detail of the rock which varies across different eras of time. This image is a close up of some of that rock and the variations in the color which can be found. Not too far from sea level we came across this area and positioned myself on the rocks next to it in order to capture the lines and textures of the scene.

 • Frost was on the grass and a little sheet of ice was on some of the ponds in Ann Morrison Park this morning. Right when you enter the park from the west there is a nicely manicured lawn which caught my eye with the frost still on the grass. Walking down the path, I noticed the lines of the trees with the walk for the picture.

 • While in the Bay Area for a few days visiting my sister and her family, I headed into San Francisco via BART on two of the days and just photographed on the street. As I had a tilt-shift lens with me the majority of the images taken on the first of the two days was with this lens as shown in the image below.

The tilt-shift lens lets you control the focal plane of the camera different than with a normal lens. This lens is commonly used for architecture in order to remove any converging lines you may get when photographing a building from below. In this instance I used the features of the lens to provide some selective focus for this cable car waiting to be turned around and head back to Market Street.

 • While in San Francisco I was walking towards the Ferry Terminal to catch a boat to Alameda when I noticed the 101 California building in the late afternoon light. With the sun almost set I made my way to the building and with a long lens looked up to capture the lines and patterns with some remaining sunlight.

 • After a week of clear skies the rain returned for most of the week. Those times the clouds roll into Juneau it does become interesting looking at the mountains around town. As I was looking towards the Mount Roberts tram on this day the lines of trees were showing for a little while in the fog allowing me to capture this image, however just a few minutes later the fog got thicker and this tree not far way disappeared from my view.

 • During a snowfall in Denver, I was walking near the Denver Art Museum and noticed the snow on the residences situated next to the museum. The lines and angles are intriguing on their own, but the snow added a different dimension in the late afternoon. I searched for an interesting area of the building and captured this of the facade on that snowy day a few weeks ago.

 • A single aircraft departs and begins an easterly turn on a cool December evening south of Denver International Airport. With some high clouds in the sky, the light from the airport illuminates the bottoms to provide contrast. This image is a 45 second exposure, from about four miles south of the airport. The solid white lines are the landing lights, while the dots on the path is the beacon light.

 • On a windy spring day I was able to head up to the clock tower of East High School, which is the oldest high school in Denver but not the oldest school building. The original East High School at 19th and Stout was demolished in 1925. The East High School building has a clock tower modeled after Independence Hall in Philadelphia. This tower sits 162 feet high and provides views of the Denver area from the location of the school near City Park. For this image I took some steps backs to include the lines and shadows entering the tower to provide a feel for the space in the building.

 • Underneath the Millennium Bridge is a sculpture by Australian artist Konstantin Dimopoulos. I first noticed this piece just after it was installed and made a point to go back and check it out when I was in the area again. Playing with some camera motion to bring out the lines of the sculpture was my inspiration in this photograph.

 • The outside of the Denver Convention Center has a modern metal look in some areas of the many blocks the building covers. While walking along Speer Blvd, I noticed the patterns formed by the stairs and building not just the lines but also the texture and shine of metal.

 • As I was headed out on a short afternoon hike I walked past some fuel tanks and noticed the afternoon light casting a shadow on one of them. Quickly grabbing my camera, I grabbed some images of the lines and patterns of the shadows knowing that upon my return the sun would be behind the nearby ridge. The challenge on this was trying to stay still with the wind howling at that time of time which is quite common in Skagway.

 • As the day moves to afternoon at the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve the wind picks up. With the wind starting to blow those lines which were led to the distance start to be obscured with the blowing sand from the gusty wind. These winds are quite common at the sand dunes based on the location of the park in the Alamosa valley and is also how they initially formed.

 • There are many ways to capture the Millennium Bridge in Denver. It wasn't too long ago none of these building were in the area, so the development of the Union Station area of Denver has allowed me to capture the growth. On this day I used a building reflection to capture the mast of the bridge and the initial Davita building in Denver. The lines on the building nicely intersected the diagonals on the bridge letting the two elements counter each other in the image.

 • One of the newest buildings is at 999 17th Street in Denver which is the Prism. Having an address on 17th Street in Downtown Denver is a status item as it has been the hub of finance for many years, though that is changing a little. The Prism brings a different look to the buildings along 17th Street with the dark blue mirrored glass provide for many angles when viewing the building as well as varying reflections just moving a few feet. For this image I zoomed in on the front of the building to show the many lines which exist on this building.

 • As I walked on the new walkway towards the Whale Sculpture in Juneau, I noticed the starfish which were at the edge of the steps of the seating area along the way. With the sunlight casting a shadow I spent a little time photographing these elements more so designed to limit skateboarding tricks on the wood. Standing above the starfish I was able to pick an angle which brought the lines through the image and also showed the face there was a step below.

 • Getting close to the ice which you encounter in the fjords of Greenland really shows you some of the details which you can find. For safety it is the smaller pieces which you can get closer, but these are also those which have been moving more in the water and over time rolling in the water. With these movements you get more of the detail from the water either melting in different directions on the piece of ice or the changes from being above or under water at various times. Looking close at this piece you start to see those lines of water in the ice and the different depth of the ice. This allows the light to reflect differently while you look at the piece.

 • While enjoying some ice cream at a shop in Hawai'i which gave you a view of a small beach in Lahaina I noticed the waves coming in and out. Putting my ice cream down on a warm February day I captured the lines of the water coming on the beach. This didn't last long however as some a whale was spotted in Lahaina Harbor quickly changing the focus of everyone.

 • In Colorado there is always excitement for the first snow of the season in the city, even if it has been snowing in the mountains for quite a while. For the 2008-2009 snow season, the first snow was not until mid-November which is quite late. A few weeks earlier I captured the fall colors around the Governor's Mansion and thought it would be a good comparison to photograph around there during this late snowfall once again working the lines into the image.

 • Located along (and in) the City Pond, the Town Hall of Reykjavik is a modern building with lines with draw you into the building itself. From the west you enter the building over a slightly curving path over the water which on many days will give you time to check out the many birds which spend time in the pond. The building is open to the public and features a large 3D map of Iceland which you can view in the lower level of the building.

 • One of the first things I do when I walk into a cathedral or abbey is to look up at the ceiling. There is so much you can find in these ceilings which were built hundreds of years ago. During a trip to England the Bath Abbey ceiling caught my attention upon walking into the building. At first I will walk around the building to take time to look at the details and also start to think how I should best photograph the details, if it is allowed. With the detailed patterns in this building I went with the repeating lines and patterns in this image.

 • During a recent visit to the United Kingdom, I became fascinated by the detailed ceilings in some of the cathedrals which I visited. While in Edinburgh, I visited Saint Giles Cathedral and after first looking around at what was at eye level started looking at the ceiling in the building. Finding the lines and patterns interesting in this cathedral I took photographs from various angles of the ceiling. When you zoom into the detail it starts to tell a different story then just part of the building which is protecting the interior.

 • Located in southern Colorado the Great Sand Dunes are still slowing building as the wind blows sand and soil deposits from the Rio Grande and its tributaries. Even with the daily changes with the blowing wind the dunes remain familiar to most who visit. There are plenty of photographic opportunities in the dunes whether using black and white or color as your palette. For this photograph, it was the lines of the dunes and contrast of the blue sky which drew me to capture this image on an early morning in May 2008.

 • As construction has continued around the Union Station area there is this view of the Davita Building which still remains, for now. I have been drawn to this perspective as it allows for a simple look at the lines of the building and the perspective of Millennium Bridge in Denver. On this day a couple of weeks ago there was a light snowfall in the city which allows the blueish hue of the building to standout on the overcast day in the city.

 • During spring in Denver and you will never know when we may get a late season snowfall in the city. This image is when a couple of inches of snow fell in Denver. As I usually do when it snows I head out to capture some images around the city and on this day headed to the LoHi area. With the intersecting lines of the freeway and the bridge I used a long exposure to capture the traffic passing under the bridge along I-25.

 • Fall brings nice warm days which allowed me to walked up to Berkeley Park. At the park some of the tennis courts were resurfaced earlier in the fall from the traditional green courts which are common in most parks. I noticed leaves lying around the court and looked for one which was on a line. On the first court I found a leaf which was on the baseline and sort of on it's own versus some of the other compositions I looked into photographing. The image of this lone leaf which later in the afternoon has probably blown across town in the wind.

 • When you first get to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve you can focus on the large dunes which sit in front of the Sangre de Christo Mountains. However there are also the small details which you can find as well as in this image. A line in the sand winds it way into the dunes as the afternoon sun casts a shadow.

 • During a road trip from Sacramento to Denver with a friend from college I had the opportunity to explore Salt Lake City as he worked at a client site. On this day in October 2009 some early snow fell in the city which was interesting as the snow line was quite obvious throughout the city especially on the lawn of the capitol building. As I walked up the steps to the State of Utah Capitol Building I noticed the leading line to the sizable building as the clouds started to part to allow some blue sky to appear as the storm rolled out of town.

 • The appearance of an iceberg is always changing. From the way the light hits the ice and the ever changing effects of the water of the piece of ice. An iceberg may have been in its current disposition for some time or it may constantly be rolling which usually happens after a piece calves from the berg. As the ice touches the water you can always find some interesting textures. This is due to the ever changing effects of the water on the structure as you can see in this image. What drew me to take this picture was the curving line amongst the layers of ice on the berg. This allows you to see the different shades of color in the ice and also wonder how long it has been since some of the ice had pealed off of the iceberg.

 • You most likely have seen the cross in the foothills to the west of Denver which was first illuminated in 1964. The location of the cross is Mount Lindo Cemetery which is accessed from Turkey Creek in Morrison. As I was driving along Alameda I noticed this perspective with the sunset and found a spot to capture the ridge line as well as the colors in the sky on a windy afternoon.

 • We all have driven under one of the newer bridges on 6th Avenue in Lakewood. On a November evening, I decided to photograph this bridge at sunset taking advantage of the light and the direction of the sunset. With this location there are two variables to consider, the sunset as well as the train schedule. Since it was a weekday the schedule had more trains along the RTD W line and this one came at just the right time to add to the image for today.

 • It was a November morning with some rain in Juneau. I headed back to Douglas but this time Sandy Beach.

It was just past low tide so there was still plenty of open area to walk around on the beach with the rain falling. After about a quarter mile I reached the Pump House which brought water into the mining area of Treadwell. Looking down the channel there was nice layering as I photographed between the pilings and the line between them for drying fish.

 • Just a year ago there was much construction work along Tennyson Street in northwest Denver. Those times have changed and people have been enjoying the street now in the Berkeley District. There are still some reminders of the construction in the area, with some saved spikes and other pieces of the old street car line along Tennyson. However in talking to people new to the area, they have no idea what it was like just one year ago.

 • During a visit to Missoula in 2009 I headed up to Lolo Pass on the Montana/Idaho state line along Route 12 with a small group of photographers/friends to capture some of the morning light. In the July morning a nice layer of dew drops were present around the area near the pass which I photographed for quite some time before moving on to other subjects in the area.

 • In September 2008 while visiting Estes Park, I had planned to photograph around Bear Lake one morning. As the first hints of light appeared I was halfway up Bear Lake Road and realized I would be stuck in the clouds. Quickly thinking of some other options, I decided to risk a risk and change locations. Finding a pullout, I headed back down the road and went up Trail Ridge Road where at tree line I emerged from the clouds. Knowing Rainbow Curve was not too far away I made it to the turnoff with about 10 minutes to spare prior to sunrise.

This will any snow which really accumulated on the sidewalk to melt. I had just walked down this path when I turned around to notice the scene of trees lining the walk with a hint of fresh leaves on the trees.

 • During a recent trip to Skagway, I was walking around the town and near the harbor instead of looking up at the mountains in the area, I was looking down to see what the stillness of the morning was showing in the harbor. At first it was a reflection of a mountain in the distance I noticed, then it was the piers in the harbor which were lining up perfectly in order in this reflection image. Not too long after I took this image, a couple of seals poked their heads up in this same area and a small crowd gathered to watch them enjoy the morning in the harbor.

 • Upon landing back in Denver it appeared the clouds were lining up for a dramatic sunset in the mile high city. As I was driving home I was thinking about a couple of locations to take advantage of this light and came up with City Park due to time concerns. About a half hour prior to sunset everything was still looking great in the sky and as I quickly stopped home they mentioned it on the early news that it could be a colorful sunset once again. However in the next thirty minuted conditions started to change and the dramatic which was expected did not occur. Out at the park I came across another photographer who thought that the colors could be good this evening as well. The one thing which you have to do is get out and photograph. I waited past sunset to get some of the dusk light making the skyline of Denver stand out from City Park.
