• Late summer is the time of year when fields of sunflowers on the eastern plains of Colorado attract photographers. The main challenge is finding where they are located as it changes each year. This year I found a field of sunflowers south of the airport near their peak. I spent a couple of afternoons photographing in this area. The image of this sunflower is the isolation of the forward sunflower as it leads the rest of the field towards the eastern sky. It is easy to lose track of time while photographing a field like this with so many options in a close space.

 • At the end of April 2013, I headed out to the plains to see how the growth was coming along for some future ideas for photographs. During the scouting I came across some fields with fresh growth and those with contrasting color. As I stood on the side of the road I worked with this concept and while moving the camera captured the fields before me. As I head back to this area in the summer it will be interesting to see how the fields change of the course of the growing season.

 • At Coors Field there is a marker indicating the first game at Coors Field in 1995. For two year prior to this the Colorado Rockies played at Mile High Stadium which is now the location of the parking lot next to Sports Authority Field. The reason why the opening gate was late in 1995 is not to allow time for the stadium to be complete, but due to the late start of the 1995 as a result of the 1994 labor issues in MLB.

 • Just prior to the start of a baseball season I went out exploring downtown Denver and headed past Coors Field. Once the season starts this bridge over 20th Street will be quite a different scene. The arch on this walkway is quite interesting with artwork of different types of balls… from baseball, golf ball, matzo ball and many more.

 • At the end of the 2010 season I headed towards Coors Field to photograph around the stadium with the skyline in the background. With the stadium in lower downtown there are plenty of great views of it with the skyline of Denver and from inside you have a great vantage of the Rocky Mountains. Just under six months until the new season.

 • Last month I made my way out to photograph near Sports Authority Field at Mile High here in Denver as the Broncos regular season was coming to a close. As the stadium was rebranded in the past year to Sports Authority Field new lighting has also been added to the exterior providing some nice accent lighting to what had been there in the past. As the game let out after a win against Cleveland dusk moved in leading to this image along the interstate. This weekend the lights will once again shine as the Broncos face the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday afternoon.

 • This is the brick walkway leading to Coors Field from the direction of Union Station along Wynkoop. Taken in the fall of 2009 while lying on the bricks in order to get the perspective. As the summer days come along this walkway will be quite busy with thousands of people taking in a baseball game in lower downtown.

 • On a November day I was in Lower Downtown Denver for lunch and afterwards walked around the area with my camera. Under some nice light I captured the statue of ‘The Player’ which sits in front of the stadium at home plate on a mild day in the city. Just a little over three months until pitchers and catchers report for spring training.

 • On a windy spring day I was able to head up to the clock tower of East High School, which is the oldest high school in Denver but not the oldest school building. The original East High School at 19th and Stout was demolished in 1925. The East High School building has a clock tower modeled after Independence Hall in Philadelphia. This tower sits 162 feet high and provides views of the Denver area from the location of the school near City Park. On this day I captured downtown Denver using the windows to frame the city making it slightly out of focus with a shallow depth of field.

 • As I explored the small village of Ittoqqortoormiit I slowly made my way up the road towards the helipad above the city. This is used to transport passengers about 40km to the nearby airport of Nerlerit Inaat (which was also where I flew into from Iceland). Once at the top of the hill there was a nice view of the village and onward to Scoresby Sound. For this image I used a shallower depth of field which puts the village slightly out of focus the further it gets towards the water and onward towards points unknown.

 • Denver is known as the Mile High City. When I have talked to people flying into Denver for the first time they expect mountains all around being a mile high, however it is just situated at base of the Rocky Mountains. In the city itself there is a reminder of the altitude from the row of purple seats at Coors Field. However one particular marking is at the State Capitol where engraved on a step leading to the west entrance and looking towards Civic Center Park is the indicator of "One Mile Above Sea Level".

 • As the Skoga River approaches the coast it drops 200 feet off the cliffs which were once the southern shoreline of Iceland, the coast is now about 3 miles south. As with many waterfalls in Iceland you can get quite close to the falls either by walking along the river or taking the steps to the top. Approaching the waterfall I noticed areas of grass to the side and headed in that direction to capture the waterfall. Being just a couple of hours from Reykjavik this is a popular place to visit but it is hard to tell that by using the field as a foreground element.

 • Driving down a dirt road outside of Missoula, Montana on a fall morning I passed through an area of fog. As I emerged from the fog, I noticed a small barn in a field on the left side of the road. I stopped to photograph the small barn and when walking up the road for a different angle noticed an area by a gate where you could look down the length of the fence. As I composed this image, the early morning light started to glow as it passed through the fog providing the magically light found in this image. Prior to leaving Missoula I would visit the spot a handful of times but was never able to recreate this morning.

 • The skies have cleared and the full moon allowed for some evening photography during a November week in Juneau. With these conditions, I headed to Skater’s Cabin which is along Mendenhall Lake.

Upon arriving at the parking area for the cabin it was cool and clear and the moon was just rising over the Juneau Ice Field. This allowed for a long exposure as the moon providing the lighting this evening. After taking this image I walked over to the lake which is showing some signs of freezing over due to the cold nights however there is still more water than ice visible at this stage.

 • Outside of the Colorado Convention Center is a Big Blue Bear looking inside the facility. This piece titled I See What You Mean by artist Lawrence Argent is one which people stop to enjoy from inside and outside the convention center. I have tried to get a new perspective of this sculpture before but this morning I decided to play off of the bear peering into the convention center. Using a shallower depth of field so the bear is slightly out of focus my thought was to peer through the foliage nearby to give another perspective of the bear.

 • The motion of the water can be mesmerizing. After a day of sailing in the Inside Passage I started to capture the ripples of the waves left behind as the Malaspina headed south towards Bellingham, Washington. Using a shallow depth of field (in the not so shallow waters), let me put the further ripples slightly out of focus as they fall out of the scene and once again flatten from the presence of the ship.

 • What I like about this image is the abstract feel of the sand which I captured. The shallow depth of field helps obscure the real perspective of the size of the sand in the image. This allows the viewer to come to their own conclusion of the scene and allows them to interpret it in their own manner which can also change over time.

 • It is not uncommon to see snow in the fall around Denver even in October. This was one of those days when a light dusting of snow fell in Denver overnight greeted with clear skies in the morning. Getting close to the ground I focused on the grass an using a shallow depth of field put the trees in the background out of focus. This allows the viewer to have a sense of place but puts the attention on the snow in the fresh spring growth.

 • The Sun Voyager sculpture sits along the water in Reykjavik, Iceland. The sculpture by sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason is described as an ode to the sun. Playing off of this name when I found myself there on an early morning I decided to bring the sun into the photograph. Finding a nice composition was the task at hand which I could then position myself to include the sun into the scene as well. By using a small depth of field (f/22) and placing the sun right at the end of the sculpture it provides the star effect in the image and also helps eliminate some of the sun glare.

 • Visiting Butchart Gardens in Victoria, British Columbia during a vacation a few years ago I spent much time with my macro lens getting close with many of the roses and other flowers in the gardens. Just prior to leaving I came across a group of flowers in a quiet part of the park and spent close to thirty minutes just on these flowers. With the macro lens it is possible to get a shallow depth of field (having a few items in focus) which is what I explored in this photograph.

 • I have walked past the Governor's Mansion in Denver many times and have always noticed the lines of the fence which surrounds the location. One fall the colors were vivid still from the last fall color in the city. Using a shallow depth of field I focused on the brick post and let the lines lead to the color in the background.

 • Mendenhall Glacier is located north of downtown Juneau in an area referred to as the valley. As the glacier slowly recedes the lake is forming and started to do so in 1931. If you follow the glacier up it will run into the Juneau Ice Field which is currently the 5th largest in North America.

This image was taken around 8pm with a couple of hours of sunlight still remaining on this day. Just over the shore are some pieces of ice which right after I took this image some kids went to try to retrieve but the smaller piece was just out of their reach.

 • On the west steps of the Colorado State Capitol is a marker indicating the location of one mile above sea level in the Mile High City. As I walked past for some reason I noticed the marker and the imprint in the steps on this day. I have walked past this location hundreds of times and even photographed the location but this was something new for me. Working with a larger depth of field as I wanted both of the indicators readable, I positioned myself on the steps in a way to get them into the image for today.

 • Denver is the Mile High City and in some places in town you will see mention of this elevation. Whether it is on the steps of the Colorado state capitol, a row of seats at Coors Field, designations on the side of some buildings or a marker along a trail in City Park it is something residents in Denver are proud of having in this city. This image is exactly one of these markers in City Park along a trail as people enjoy the park just west of downtown Denver.

 • It is always fun to not only watch fireworks but also photograph them, especially as you will not know what to expect during the show. On this evening capturing some fireworks over Coors Field, it is always good to determine if you want to just capture the displays in the sky or also an element in the foreground. Based on this decision it will really determine where you will photograph the fireworks from and also what type of lens length will be best. For a scene like this a longer lens (telephoto) works best since it lets you get close to the fireworks and capture their detail.

 • Driving home recently from an event I drove past Invesco Field and from there noticed the skyline on a nice spring day. Everything has greened out even with some later snowfalls this year and the skyline is filling in nicely from this vantage point west of downtown. With the constant building taking place in Denver the past few years it will certainty look different in the next few years or sooner.

 • Earlier in the spring I was scouting the area around the airport and noticed an aircraft on final approach to Denver International Airport. Looking down the road I had noticed the contrast of the two fields ahead and now the plane overflying one of those fields which got me thinking. I headed back to this location to capture some departures on this day as the aircraft quickly climbed over the Colorado plains.

 • One autumn I was in the Steamboat Springs area and headed north towards Steamboat Lake State Park. As I got to the lake and saw the color towards Hahn's Peak I knew this was a place to stop and photograph. From the lake reflection, with a boat on it, to the fields across the lake with livestock all the way up Hahn's Peak with a hint of snowfall it was just a perfect scene that afternoon.

 • After taking the Mount Roberts Tramway from Juneau, I started to hike towards Gastineau Peak. With views of the city and surrounding area it was a great view and soon after I came across fields of wildflowers. For this image I found a collection which stood out and provided a view down the Gastineau Channel towards the airport giving the flowers the primary focus but also allowing a sense of place.

 • This past weekend I once again spent some time exploring the plains just outside of Denver. As I was driving along I noticed an aircraft on final approach to Denver International Airport. Looking down the road I had noticed the contrast of the two fields ahead and now the plane overflying one of those fields which got me thinking. Waiting for some more aircraft to arrive I positioned myself at the edge of these fields and photographed as a Frontier Airlines airplane neared landing at the airport.

 • As I started on the trail from the Mount Roberts Tramway I was greeted with fields of wildflowers in mid-June. I started photographing the flowers as I headed further up the trail. As I made my way back towards the tram I found this grouping of lupine with a view of Douglas Island behind. Getting low to the flowers I found an angle which captured the flowers as well as some of the snow covered mountains.

 • During a trip in March to San Diego I was able to experience the fields of wildflowers near Carlsbad. Under soft light I walked through the fields and captured the spring growth.
