• I first visited Quebec City when I was nine and on a recent visit to the city still remembered some of the paths we took and that young age. This time around on one of the evenings there, I watched the afternoon turn to evening looking down at the Chateau Frontenac and St. Lawrence River. The old city of Quebec City really has the European charm and feel as I spent time exploring and photographing some of the architecture in the city.

• I headed up to Central City just prior to sunset in Colorado on a November day. Once you get past the casinos of Blackhawk and Central City you will find the Central City Opera House which was built in 1878 during the mining boom in the area. This building is now a National Historical Landmark and quite busy in the during the summer festival. On this day is was just the street lights and remaining daylight in the area, however looking down the hill there was plenty of activity. As I was photographing the building a car passed by which showed the long duration of time the shutter was open taking this image at dusk.

• Located along (and in) the City Pond, the Town Hall of Reykjavik is a modern building with lines with draw you into the building itself. From the west you enter the building over a slightly curving path over the water which on many days will give you time to check out the many birds which spend time in the pond. The building is open to the public and features a large 3D map of Iceland which you can view in the lower level of the building.

• As I explored Quebec City, I found a small street in the Lower Old Town which had umbrellas hanging the small area. Over the course of two days I visited this street multiple times to capture the colorful umbrellas with a different sky as a background. On my final day in Quebec City it was a nice clear day which allowed me to have a constant background but also position the sun to allow it to show just a little bit behind one of the umbrellas.

• Walking around a city is the best way for you to experience the city itself. On one day in Reykjavik I did just that and started to explore. As I headed down one street I found a nice reflection of the modern building right next to it and worked through the parked cars to find the best angle to capture the image.

• The main concert hall in Reykjavik is Harpa which was designed to resemble the landscape around Iceland. As I walked around the city and passed by the building I would always stop as throughout the day and varying conditions the facade looks quite different. For this image I zoomed in at the gap of the two main components of the complex. This allowed the detail of the building to show as well as giving the glass different sizes in the frame based on their location.

• As I stayed in Quebec City I noticed looking out the window the reflection of the older building I was in from the modern building across the street. This gave me an idea for a photograph, so I took my camera and worked to find the best location to take the image which would align the windows in the older building. When taking an image like this the direction of light is important and as it was shining in my direction I had to be careful for lens flare in the camera itself.

• When looking at the design elements of Harpa in Reykjavik in Iceland there are many ways to view the building. As I walked around photographing the building over the course of time what I was seeing would change. In this image it was the angle which gave the exterior of the building, as captured from inside, the look of chains linked up together. With this in my mind I changed the was I was photographing to vertical to make those chains longer in the frame.

• On Hong Kong Island there is a whole transit system of trams. On one day I became familiar with the system due to a lost mobile phone. As I sat in the front of the tram on the upper level I was able to capture the motion of the tram as it went through central Hong Kong around sunset. Using a longer shutter speed the movement of the tram allowed the blur to occur.

• The times I have stood in front of Harpa it never is the same. As the environmental elements change so does the appearance of the building where if you were to take this same image over multiple days you would get a differing result. For a while I stood in this location and watched it change as the sun went behind the clouds on this early September day. With Reykjavik also being so far north the position of the sun changes drastically over the course of the year as well which also provides differing directions of shadows from the light.
Front-Harpa.tif
• The patterns of Harpa in Reykjavik are quite interesting. With the layers of glass just moving a little will give you a different perspective of the building with the varying lines. As I moved around the building I looked at the different compositions with not only the materials of the building but also how the light hit the building during the course of the day. In this image I was working on the repeating lines and patterns which exist on the building and stacking them upon each other.
Patterns-Harpa.tif
• As I walked away from Harpa I looked back and noticed the walls of patterns climbing and the light coming through the structure. Just by moving a little I was able to position the light in a spot to get this effect as the structure just allowed a little hint of light. With the sun not taking over the sun it allowed me to capture the details of the building and the varying patterns.
Sunlight-through-Harpa.tif
• It is not the exterior of Harpa which gives much to take in and photograph, the inside is full of interesting elements as well. While walking around the building I noticed the shadows in the various areas of the complex. As I headed up to the second floor I immediately came across the following scene. The challenge here was to position myself to capture the color reflection, but also not to block traffic which was in the building at this time as well. I experimented with having people walking through the scene, but ended up with the image of just the shadows on the floor of Harpa.
Harpa-Patterns-Ground.tif
• While I spent much time photographing the details of Harpa in Reykjavik, I also did capture some of the entire building to help provide context. Looking at a building like this can be quite overwhelming about where to photograph first. When I first walked up to Harpa it was from along the shoreline which allowed me to key in on some detail of the building first prior to moving around to explore all the little pieces. This let me get comfortable with the different shapes and patterns prior to starting to photograph other areas, and also taking breaks to allow my mind to reset and start new in different areas.

• You never know what to expect when spring is around in Denver, it could be 70 degrees one day and snow the next. With this variety this makes it a great time to photograph around the city as the variety in color and potential for the snow in the city or mountains remains. On this day I was photographing around City Park and decided to make my way towards the golf course where I found trees in full bloom. Using this as a foreground I framed the city of Denver behind and naturally the mountains as well for this image.
Denver-Skyline-City-Park-Spring.tif
• As you walk through City Park there are great views of the city of Denver due to the proximity of the city to park. This is also true on the golf course, and on an early spring day I went to one of the more popular view of the city. For this image I decided to do something a little different and took the image as a vertical while also including the flag for the hole. The tall vertical of the flag worked well with two of the taller buildings in Denver in the background before heading beyond to the mountains.

• Denver is the Mile High City and in some places in town you will see mention of this elevation. Whether it is on the steps of the Colorado state capitol, a row of seats at Coors Field, designations on the side of some buildings or a marker along a trail in City Park it is something residents in Denver are proud of having in this city. This image is exactly one of these markers in City Park along a trail as people enjoy the park just west of downtown Denver.

• The City Park Criterium is held each year in Denver's City Park. For a good portion of the day races of varying levels took place around the park on either the long or short course for a set duration of time. The long course provides a scenic view of the boat house, city and mountains as the cyclists speed past. Due to some late season snow there is still snow on the peaks of the higher mountains. As the cyclists went past I used a shutter speed to show the movement of these riders in the event as they passed the location.

• On a fall afternoon in Denver I headed out to City Park to photograph at sunset. Being just past the autumnal equinox the light was still behind the city skyline as I waited for sunset. Taking advantage of this afternoon light I composed by scene and let the light flow into the background which provided a source to backlight the city as well as the trees within the park.

• Upon landing back in Denver it appeared the clouds were lining up for a dramatic sunset in the mile high city. As I was driving home I was thinking about a couple of locations to take advantage of this light and came up with City Park due to time concerns. About a half hour prior to sunset everything was still looking great in the sky and as I quickly stopped home they mentioned it on the early news that it could be a colorful sunset once again. However in the next thirty minuted conditions started to change and the dramatic which was expected did not occur. Out at the park I came across another photographer who thought that the colors could be good this evening as well. The one thing which you have to do is get out and photograph. I waited past sunset to get some of the dusk light making the skyline of Denver stand out from City Park.

• Located about a mile east of Downtown Denver, City Park provides an opportunity to photograph the nature of the park, the skyline as well as the mountains. On this occasion, I headed to the City Park Golf Course to find a good spot to capture the scene. As I headed to a tee box on the golf course I found a tree which helped mirror the skyline which also helped frame the city.

• Snow was plentiful early in the winter 2012/13 season. When it finally snowed in Denver I grabbed my camera and headed out into the elements. This was the largest amount of snowfall which fell from one storm at this in the season making for much excitement to finally receive a good snowfall in the metro area. While I have some photographs of Washington Park and Sloans Lake in the snow, City Park is a park I have tried to capture in the past. Walking back to the area my car was parked I noticed the curve of the lake and trees in the elements which I thought would be the perfect opportunity to capture a winter scene in City Park to compliment the scenes from the other Denver parks.

• A couple of years ago I headed to City Park to capture the morning light in the park. This morning it turned to be foggy in the park and provided a new perspective to capture the city skyline through the park. While the fog provided a new perspective it was also the morning dew rising from the grass which drew me in to this image as well.

• As I was heading home from the airport I noticed the minimal clouds over the mountains and thought it could be an interesting sunset over Denver as I heard had been the case the past couple of days. It was a quick turnaround from when I got home to making it out to City Park in Denver. Upon arriving at the park I found a location on the golf course (watching out for golfers on this warm November day) and waited for sunset to occur. At first it appeared the clouds may be a little better north of my location but just after that thought this occurred making it a great sunset over the Mile High City of Denver.

• A city can reveal many things by the style and manner in which it was constructed. In Denver one morning a few years ago I noticed a different look then what was expected in the reflection from one building. The result of the change brought additional character to the skyline and different thoughts of what it creates over time to the modern city.

• In the summer here in Denver there is plenty of outdoor activity at City Park. As I made my way through the park I had plenty of runners and bicyclists pass by and approaching the center of the park I noticed this cyclist pass as the employees who rent bicycles started to bring items out for the day along this sweeping path.

• One late spring I headed to City Park in Denver to photograph around the park. As I walked near the pavilion in the park I noticed the fence along Ferril Lake in the park. Leaning over the fence I captured the image of the pavilion in the park with the tower of East High School in the distance.

• Over the weekend a fair amount of spring snow fell over Denver. With the warm temperatures many trees were already showing their blossoms which made for a nice scene to photograph. I headed out in the City Park area with my camera to capture some of these scenes. As I walked through the park I quickly found trees with red or white blossoms as well as trees already showing their leaves for the summer season. These colors made for an interesting contrast to the black, grey and white normally you would find in the winter.

• Spring snowstorms provide some great contrast in the Denver of winter and spring. Walking around City Park I found this group of trees showing their blossoms as the snow provided a winter covering on them. With the snow continuing the fall it wasn't long until the trees were fully covered in heavy snow on their branches. This snow didn't last long as the temperatures started to warm up again during the week quickly making the snowstorm a memory to look back at in pictures and memories.

• The High Line is a popular walking path on the western side of Manhattan. On a recent trip to New York City I was on the path with my camera enjoying the nice day and photographing while making my way south. Being above the street level provides some different perspectives and this time I was trying to capture something new from previous visits. Not too far along the way I noticed the lines on this building and took some photos using a longer lens to get close to the facade of the building and fill the frame.

• This picture from Reno was taken in 2011 when the area was getting plenty of moisture including nearby Lake Tahoe with record snowfall. Playing with some different angles I noticed this puddle from the recent rain and positioned myself for the reflection image. Even at daybreak there were still a handful of people just heading out of the casinos after a long night of gambling.

• It has been dry and clear most days in the last few weeks in Denver, with these clear skies I headed to City Park to see how this translated at sunset. From the golf course I watched the sun descend over the mountains and the orange and blue colors light become the backdrop over the city. While there has been quite a bit of growth in the city the last few years however from City Park it is not as noticeable from here as it is in other views of the skyline.

• The details of architecture have always grabbed by eye, thus as I took the Chicago Architecture Foundation river cruise through the city it gave me plenty of opportunity to photograph the city where I was born. This scene caught me as it illustrates differences in modern design and how it shows itself in the city. From the simple design on the right to the reflective exterior on the left providing for a different result depending on the time of day and your location you view this building.

• With some wildfires just southwest of Denver I headed out to City Park in early October to photograph the skyline at sunset. Sometimes the light smoke at the areas will give a little more orange during sunset than normal and this was the case with this image. From my position in City Park I was able to position the setting sun at the Wells Fargo Building (Cash Register) and the mountains. Taking the image towards the sun also allowed me to silhouette the skyline of the city as well as the mountain skyline in the distance.

• During a road trip from Sacramento to Denver with a friend from college I had the opportunity to explore Salt Lake City as he worked at a client site. On this day in October 2009 some early snow fell in the city which was interesting as the snow line was quite obvious throughout the city especially on the lawn of the capitol building. As I walked up the steps to the State of Utah Capitol Building I noticed the leading line to the sizable building as the clouds started to part to allow some blue sky to appear as the storm rolled out of town.

• Towards the end of the summer one year living in Missoula, Montana I was able to capture the sunset over the city. It has been a pretty active wildfire season in the area, but by the end of August the skies cleared of the smoke around the city and evenings like this returned to the city.

The full bloom on a clear September day allowed me to capture the flowers and the City and County of Denver Building. In the next couple of weeks this will start to change and the city will start to remove the flowers from the many parks in the City of Denver.

• On a windy spring day I was able to head up to the clock tower of East High School, which is the oldest high school in Denver but not the oldest school building. The original East High School at 19th and Stout was demolished in 1925. The East High School building has a clock tower modeled after Independence Hall in Philadelphia. This tower sits 162 feet high and provides views of the Denver area from the location of the school near City Park. On this day I captured downtown Denver using the windows to frame the city making it slightly out of focus with a shallow depth of field.

• Walking from Larimer Square towards the Auraria Campus on an afternoon in Denver I noticed the reflection of Downtown Denver on one of the newest buildings on the campus. The CU Denver Student Commons Building was providing a nice frame of the city and once finding a location between a few trees across Speer Blvd I was able to capture part of the city using the framing of this building.

• Denver is known as the Mile High City. When I have talked to people flying into Denver for the first time they expect mountains all around being a mile high, however it is just situated at base of the Rocky Mountains. In the city itself there is a reminder of the altitude from the row of purple seats at Coors Field. However one particular marking is at the State Capitol where engraved on a step leading to the west entrance and looking towards Civic Center Park is the indicator of "One Mile Above Sea Level".

• Photographing and living in Denver has its benefits since I can visit the same areas over and over easily and watch them change. On this visit to City Park I went to a familiar spot and zoomed into the city a little to capture the fresh grass of spring at the park on this spring day in Denver.

• One of the most known landmarks in Reykjavik is Hallgrímskirkja. This Lutheran church stands almost 250 feet high and being on a hill is visible from many areas of the city. It took quite some time for the church to be built, 41 years, and was completed in 1986. The most photographed part of the church is the front, so I explored for a little different view of the church which I found on the opposite side. It was quite empty on this side of the church on a nice late summer day in the capitol city. As I photographed from here you can see some of the design elements noticeable in front blended more so with the building itself.

• On my final day in Havana a small weather system moved into the city bringing up the wind as it passed through the city. Even with the wind I headed out to the Malecon and was treated to the waves crashing against the seawall. I watched in awe of the force of the waves but also used that time to see where the waves were breaking, with that knowledge I searched for an interesting foreground and pointed my camera. Within five minute this wave crashed into the seawall send up a large wave with great force.

• While visiting Vancouver exploring the city I photographed some of the city and one thing which I found interest in was the roof line of Canada Place. When first viewing the roof is reminded me of Denver International Airport however the lines at both are a little different. This image was taken from a distance capturing just the roof of the building and the lines and patterns it creates on the Vancouver waterfront.

• The view of Denver from the northeast is not a common angle you see of the city. On a summer morning I headed to a park in Uptown to photograph the skyline of the city. The skyline looks a little sparse from this view, however it will no doubt be changing in the upcoming years as Denver continues to grow.

• Just like in any large city growth is inevitable. In Denver the past few years this is quite noticeable anywhere you look with new buildings sprouting up near Union Station and other locations. On this day as I was walking through lower downtown I looked up noticed the old and new elements of the buildings blending together. The new building is 1800 Larimer, also known as the Xcel Energy Building, while the old is the Denver City Cable Railway Company building. There are plenty more instances of this in the Denver area, it is just finding the right angle to see how they work together.

• Arriving at one of the more popular locations for sunset photographs of Denver, the sky was clear and the wind brisk. Soon the colors of the sky started to change as civil twilight passed. I noticed a few small clouds a little north of my location and thought it would be nice if those moved south to be in the image. It then came to mind this was the start of the system moving into the city over the next twenty-four hours which was fto bring snow to the city. After about ten minutes more clouds started moving in and I was wondering if enough clouds would develop in the right location for sunrise. As sunrise approached at 7:29 MDT, more and more clouds started to move into the frame and then shortly after sunrise the image was captured.

• As construction has continued around the Union Station area there is this view of the Davita Building which still remains, for now. I have been drawn to this perspective as it allows for a simple look at the lines of the building and the perspective of Millennium Bridge in Denver. On this day a couple of weeks ago there was a light snowfall in the city which allows the blueish hue of the building to standout on the overcast day in the city.

• During spring in Denver and you will never know when we may get a late season snowfall in the city. This image is when a couple of inches of snow fell in Denver. As I usually do when it snows I head out to capture some images around the city and on this day headed to the LoHi area. With the intersecting lines of the freeway and the bridge I used a long exposure to capture the traffic passing under the bridge along I-25.

• In March of 2013 after a Saturday snowstorm I headed to Sloans Lake in Denver to photograph at sunrise. When I got to the lake in below freezing temperatures the steam was rising from the lake. • In early July I headed to Cheesman Park to capture sunset over Denver. I had photographed from this location before and had the idea of the shot I would like in my mind. Leaving my house it appeared a storm may be brewing and could obstruct the vision I had for that evening, however I pushed myself and got to the location just after sunset hoping to catch dusk over the city. The shot I got here I was happy with for the evening, however I still stuck around and next week we will see the change which took place over the next thirty minutes on that early July evening.

• As I explored the small village of Ittoqqortoormiit I slowly made my way up the road towards the helipad above the city. This is used to transport passengers about 40km to the nearby airport of Nerlerit Inaat (which was also where I flew into from Iceland). Once at the top of the hill there was a nice view of the village and onward to Scoresby Sound. For this image I used a shallower depth of field which puts the village slightly out of focus the further it gets towards the water and onward towards points unknown.

• On a rainy day I explored along the waterfront in Reykjavik spending some time photographing the Sun Voyager sculpture. On this day it was a little less crowded which allowed me to get closer and spend more time at the sculpture. As I started to looking back towards the city I noticed how Hallgrímskirkja was visible up the hill. Once I noticed this I spent time photographing the two of them together which with the rain allowed me to focus on the rain drops on the Sun Voyager as the church fell slightly out of focus in the distance.

• On many mornings while I was in Havana I would walk the streets as each day was beginning. In any city it is quite different of the morning activities as people start their day. From children heading to school, businesses opening up and people walking towards their jobs. This morning as I headed towards the capital of Cuba I found myself on a street leading directly to the capitol which I was able to capture with the cars on a one way street heading towards the building.

• I was in Washington DC during the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. I was a there a little past the peak but there was still plenty to capture along the Tidal Basin as well as around the city. It was a little windy one of the days I was there and noticed the movement of the water in the basin. With the cherry blossoms starting to fall off from the wind as well there were areas in which the blossoms were gathering. I pointed my camera towards these areas and let the motion from the water make the image.

• I headed out to a pier near downtown Juneau to capture the early morning light prior to sunrise. With sunrise almost 8:00am it doesn't require that early of a wake-up call but still enough to get the pre-dawn light. As I have mentioned before outside of the cruise ship season it is definitely a different city.

• A spring storm dropped some snow along the Front Range of Colorado. The position of the structure helps tell the story of the snow with the backdrop of the growing City of Denver.

• After 36 hours along the Inside Passage the Alaska Marine Highways vessel Malaspina approached the Ketchikan, Alaska. Compared to the past couple of days it was quite the metropolis and the largest city I would see for the next two days. Heading into port seaplanes were flying around under overcast skies, or a somewhat nice day for the area as the rain was just a drizzle. Ketchikan is where the maintenance takes place for the AMHS vessels which was taking place preparing the fleet for the upcoming summer season.

• It was an interesting morning weather wise as some change is in the air. Over the city there was clouds but as you looked out towards the mountains it was blue sky. Walking around Civic Center Park I headed up the steps of the Colorado State Capitol and was treated with a nice view of the mountains with still some fall color in the area.

• A little bit of snow fell in the Denver area yesterday, and with this precipitation I grabbed my camera as I went to some appointments in the downtown area. On the way I stopped by the Colorado State Capitol and ducked in an area to get out of the wind for a little bit, taking this image while there. Looking west from the capitol you can see the City and County of Denver Building across Civic Center Park on this snowy February day.

• Upon the arrival at the outlook over the city the colors in the sky were starting to change color quickly as just enough clouds were in the sky for color to be present over Denver. This image was just prior to sunrise and as I have done in the past I let the buildings go to shadow for the most part in this image.

• Fall is definitely in the air in Denver and the color is also visible along Speer Blvd. The last couple of days while driving along Speer Blvd I have noticed the changing leaves in the city with some of the trees already empty of leaves there are plenty of trees in peak color this fall. This afternoon I decided to walk around this area to capture some images of the trees near the Colorado Convention Center. Depending on the weather in the next couple of days this scene could be quite different come midweek.

• While in Montreal during the fall there was plenty of fall foliage in full display. The various colors on the trees and ground were quite impressive. As I explored the city I came across a pond with leaves which had fallen into the water. With the moving water I used a slow shutter speed to capture a little of the movement of the leaf against the rocks on the bottom.

• When you arrive at the airport in Boise, there it states Welcome to the City of Trees as you take the escalator towards baggage claim. Prior to heading to the airport I stopped by Ann Morrison Park near the Boise River. As sunset was approaching the park was filled with people playing disc golf as well as leaves from the trees as the peak color had passed. Once again getting low to the ground to capture the grass and leaves I captured the image.

• As I walked through Caras Park in Missoula, Montana one morning while visiting there was a storm which was starting to move into the city. As the clouds started to get darker I noticed the canopy in the park standing out against the storm clouds. Finding a nice angle I captured the peaks of the canopy as it rose into the threatening clouds of the day.

• While out photographing on a morning with marine layer in the San Diego area, I headed to Harbor Island which is along San Diego Bay. As I was photographing the morning and what there was of the light I noticed the person in the above image heading away from the city. Not being at a good location at the time I just wrote of that opportunity. However about 15 minutes later I saw them heading back towards the downtown area of San Diego and found a location to capture them in the morning light with the skyline in the background as well.

For this image I took some steps backs to include the lines and shadows entering the tower to provide a feel for the space in the building.

• Located in Western Montana, Missoula is a little then the eastern part of the state. While living there for a few months during the fall I hiked up part of the hill to the east of the city to capture the fall colors changing around the University of Montana. Over the course of a couple of weeks it was a morning routine to go to this spot and photograph and after a while some of the regulars would stop and chat. There were a few locations I photographed from to show the clock tower with different backgrounds.

• After taking the Mount Roberts Tramway from Juneau, I started to hike towards Gastineau Peak. With views of the city and surrounding area it was a great view and soon after I came across fields of wildflowers. For this image I found a collection which stood out and provided a view down the Gastineau Channel towards the airport giving the flowers the primary focus but also allowing a sense of place.

• I headed to a park I have passed many times while traveling on Speer Blvd but never realized what it consisted of as I sped on past the park. Alamo Placita Park is one of those parks which people have seen, but never have stopped more so as it is a small neighborhood park. Even the City and County of Denver website has limited information about the park itself. Walking around the park the image I wanted to walk away with was easily the tie in to Speer and the limited knowledge of the park. As it was near sunset I first thought about the lights of cars passing by the park, but seeing this set of stairs leading into the park this was a good place to start with the traffic taking the background. At first I was going to leave this as a color image, but once the sun set the color of the stone was changed with the various color temperatures of the nearby lights so I converted it to a black and white image which I feel helps tell the story of the lesser known park as well.

• Connecting the Commons Park area of the city with Lower Downtown is the Denver Millennium Bridge. Dedicated in 2002, this bridge has drawn much use as well as many individuals photographing the cable-stayed bridge. One evening I headed towards the area to photograph with another photographer and even though it was a moon lit evening noticed the contrast between the mast and cables with the dark evening sky. Finding an angle to just bring in as much of the bridge and not the surrounding buildings was the end results of the Lines in the Night.

• Walking around Denver this morning on a cool clear morning I was looking for something I have not noticed before while working around in the city. I found there is plenty of items which fall into this category but not just with the new construction happening at this time. This morning I noticed the light was mostly straight down the the numbered streets in the downtown area (if you are not familiar with downtown Denver they run on a SE/NW direction).

I took advantage of this direct light on Union Station and other buildings, but as I was walking back towards my car I spotted the strong sun on the above image. With street construction in the area, I was able to stand in a recently paved area which was still closed to traffic and capture this image.

• In the summer of 2014, Union Station opened after construction to redo the facility into a transit hub over the past few years. While this is complete, there is still plenty of construction happening in the area. Where I was standing in this picture is no longer possible since a building is being constructed right there, however in late 2010 I was exploring Denver during a snowfall in the city. At this time some of the construction in the Union Station area had started near the Millennium Bridge, however if you walked past this it was business as normal. I started to set up a scene to photograph in hopes the light rail train would depart soon. Just after framing the picture, the train departed and with a 15 second exposure captured the motion of the train as it headed south.

• I was near the corner of Speer and Champa in the late afternoon take some pictures when a driver in a car at the red light started talking to me while he was waiting for the light to change. He mentioned the reflection of the city on the building a block back from the direction he was driving. As soon as he mentioned that I thought about it for a minute and knew what building he was talking about as I had noticed that scene before. I was heading back in that direction to my car and stopped at the building to photograph the reflections and skyline of Denver.

• I was heading back across San Francisco Bay to Bay Farm Island as the sky started to light up during sunset. From the back of the ferry I watched as the sky changed color first across San Francisco and then across the peninsula as the ferry headed south. This was a nice surprise after a day exploring the City and Angel Island.

• After the City and Borough of Juneau completed the dock expansion project they added sculptures where the cruise ships use to tie up along the boardwalk. As I walked along these one evening the sun was starting to set allowing me to posting myself in a location where the sun would be behind the metal. I then used an aperture which would give me a star effect from the sun which also comes through the metal of the sculpture.

• In the spring of 2009 I made by way to Rocky Mountain National Park to photograph along Trail Ridge Road. The road was still in the process of being cleared for the season and scheduled to open in less than a week. After photographing up the road a couple of miles I made my way back to my car. Noticing the road leading towards Longs Peak I put down my tripod and captured the image. With the long exposure of thirty seconds it also caught the city lights of Boulder and Denver lighting up the clouds in the distance.

• In Colorado there is always excitement for the first snow of the season in the city, even if it has been snowing in the mountains for quite a while. For the 2008-2009 snow season, the first snow was not until mid-November which is quite late. A few weeks earlier I captured the fall colors around the Governor's Mansion and thought it would be a good comparison to photograph around there during this late snowfall once again working the lines into the image.

• I have walked past the Governor's Mansion in Denver many times and have always noticed the lines of the fence which surrounds the location. One fall the colors were vivid still from the last fall color in the city. Using a shallow depth of field I focused on the brick post and let the lines lead to the color in the background.

• There are many indicators of Denver being the Mile High City, but the one most known is on the steps of the State Capitol. As I walked by the capitol after some earlier rain, I noticed a puddle on the steps and the reflection being cast when standing in one position. The puddle was in a perfect spot to frame the steps with the reflection of the step stating "One Mile Above Sea Level".

• I was photographing downtown Denver from Cheesman Park when a storm moved into the city in early July. From my location I watched as the sky started to light up across Denver and continued to photograph from my location until it was no longer safe to do so. With a quick shutter I capture many images of the skyline including this one as lightning lit the Denver skyline through the pavilion at Cheesman Park.

• I headed out to photograph as some snow fell right around the holidays. From Commons Park I pointed my camera towards Union Station to capture the scene with the train station and city skyline. With the upcoming development around Union Station this most likely a view which will no longer exist in the future, however I am sure there will be plenty of other possibilities in other areas as the development continues.
