  • I have captured sunrise over Denver from Sloans Lake many times. On this morning with the difference in temperature between the water and the air steam formed right at sunrise but soon burned off as the sun climbed in the sky. Just as I was about to leave this location, a flock of birds flew into the frame for a few seconds which I was able to capture.

  • During the initial snow on Friday February 3rd, I made my way to Sloans Lake which is west of downtown. Walking around in the snow I headed to an area of trees when I saw this one along the lake. The tree next to the water with the snow still falling is what grabbed my attention. One of the items to watch while photographing in the snow is where you are walking as the trail you make could end up being in the next picture you want to take. For this image it was not an issue, and I was also careful just in case I wanted to head back later to photograph some more.

  • In March of 2013 after a Saturday snowstorm I headed to Sloans Lake in Denver to photograph at sunrise. When I got to the lake in below freezing temperatures the steam was rising from the lake. Positioning myself for sunrise I wait to the morning light to pick up more of this steam with the City of Denver in the background from just west of downtown.

  • Taking advantage of a large snowfall in Denver, I headed to Sloans Lake which is along the western border of Denver. Walking around the lake I noticed this flowing tree and started to photograph it with the lake in the background. I sort of laughed to myself as it does have a little similarity to the image Winter in Washington Park which I have photographed a few times before as well.

  • It is not uncommon to see snow in the fall around Denver even in October. This was one of those days when a light dusting of snow fell in Denver overnight greeted with clear skies in the morning. Getting close to the ground I focused on the grass an using a shallow depth of field put the trees in the background out of focus. This allows the viewer to have a sense of place but puts the attention on the snow in the fresh spring growth.

  • As I parked my car at Sloans Lake, I had a plan to head towards the lake. This was until I noticed the sun rising above the trees on the eastern side of the park and some frost still on the grass and leaves. Using a low perspective with a leaf for the foreground I captured this image with a different angle of view.

  • During the equinox there had been smoke from fires in the west as well as some much needed rain in Denver. Last week I took advantage of the clear skies to capture sunrise over Denver. At this time of the year the view from Sloans Lake allows the sun to rise directly over the buildings in downtown Denver. Preparing for this at the western edge of the park I position myself close to where I felt the sun would be over the city when creating this image.

  • I headed to Sloans Lake for some afternoon light on a November afternoon. First stop was photographing the skyline across the lake with a steady breeze blowing. Prior to leaving the lake I checked out some other areas and found some tall grasses backlit blowing in the wind. Letting the sun wash out some of the scene I photographed these with a hint of the Rocky Mountains in the distance prior to the sun dropping behind the mountains to end another day in Denver.

  • I was driving home on a November afternoon and as I approached Sloans Lake noticed the sunset over my shoulder and how the rays were filtering through and lighting up the sky. It was the area I was thinking of photographing on this day and I quickly made my way to a point on the east side of the lake facing the mountains. With the sunset standing out people who were walking around the lake stopped to take it in as well getting a special treat on this nice fall day.

  • When you find a tree which has character you find yourself back to photograph it in various seasons in different conditions. On this day I found that the November sunset would go through the tree in the perspective that I have captured the tree before. It was waiting for that right moment to get the rays of the sun through the tree for this image.

  • One morning while walking around Sloans Lake in Denver at sunrise I noticed the shape of this tree in the distance. As I approached the tree the sun started to rise over the horizon fitting in perfectly to the scene and providing for the starburst look using a small aperture as well as the leaves on the tree to provide the effect while shooting into the sun.
