  • During the summer of 2009 I hiked to Jasper Lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. Many of the wildflowers in the area were starting to peak which made a nice hike even more memorable. On the way down from the lake, I noticed the collection of Columbines right next to the trail and having a camera with me captured this image.

  • Heading back from Steamboat Springs a few years ago I made a stop on the way back along the road leading to the Flat Top Wilderness area. With a setting of aspen trees and plenty of columbine underneath I photographed in the area for a while. During this time I also played with some motion on the camera while photographing the aspen which is the image in this photograph. Using a small aperture, I was able to get a slow shutter speed which allowed me to move the camera giving this effect. It took a little while to find the right looking aspens, but the result in something which is almost three dimensional in look all created in-camera.

  • One summer on the way to Steamboat Springs I stopped at Rabbit Ears Pass to photograph the wildflowers which were in full bloom at that time. While fighting off the mosquitos I found some paintbrush and using a shallow depth of focus allowed the other wildflowers to become out of focus in this image.

  • I headed up to Central City just prior to sunset in Colorado on a November day. Once you get past the casinos of Blackhawk and Central City you will find the Central City Opera House which was built in 1878 during the mining boom in the area. This building is now a National Historical Landmark and quite busy in the during the summer festival. On this day is was just the street lights and remaining daylight in the area, however looking down the hill there was plenty of activity. As I was photographing the building a car passed by which showed the long duration of time the shutter was open taking this image at dusk.

  • One summer I met up with some friends near Marble, Colorado and spent a weekend exploring the high country in the area. The valley between the mountains were filled with wildflowers and we spent many hours photographing and exploring the area. As I was photographing some flowers below, I looked up and saw this scene. Two flowers above all the others with a crisp blue sky behind them. Moving just a little I start to capture this scene which was above me prior to moving onto the next area of flowers.

  • As I navigated the roads near Marble, Colorado I came across a lake with calm water. This provided a great surface to capture the reflection of the Rocky Mountains in full fall colors. Just a day prior some early snow fell in the area which still was on the higher peaks in the distance.

  • It is always fun to head to the mountains and capture the fall colors, but also at that time it is fun to try new techniques to capture the season as well. Hiking back from a lake I came across an area of snow with freshly fallen leaves. I started to capture this area but then thought of using a fisheye lens which another photographer with me had in their bag. Using the fisheye lens and a tripod to extend out the camera over the area of snow I was able to capture this image. As you can see the fisheye brings a different perspective to the image.

  • After an early season snowfall in the mountains the fall colors are given an extra element of fresh snow on the peaks. It had been a couple of days since a few inches of snow had fallen amongst the trees leaving just a reminder of the snow on the mountains with a crisp blue sky.

  • During late September of 2006, I was exploring the Colorado mountains and the fall colors. It was quite unexpected but a heavy snowfall also occurred around this time blending the seasons of fall and winter together. As I navigated the mountains in Central Colorado, I started to look at the landscape of the early winter and how the light of September fell onto the mountains. Normally the light we see with the first snowfall is a little later in the season and lights up the mountains in a different manner.

  • One autumn I was in the Steamboat Springs area and headed north towards Steamboat Lake State Park. As I got to the lake and saw the color towards Hahn's Peak I knew this was a place to stop and photograph. From the lake reflection, with a boat on it, to the fields across the lake with livestock all the way up Hahn's Peak with a hint of snowfall it was just a perfect scene that afternoon.

  • I headed up to Dinosaur Ridge to scout and take some images of a scene I first noticed a few years ago. The clouds were starting to move in so I wasn't sure if the weather would cooperate however you never know unless you are there. Once I found the location again I searched nearby for better areas and set-up my tripod be aware of small cactus in the area as well. As the sun set over the mountains I worked on some long exposures including the one in this post, leaving me better prepared as I head back to the area this spring.

  • As you climb on Interstate 70 west from Denver you will quickly find yourself in the mountains. After climbing in elevation at the exit for Genesee you are treated to a view of the Rocky Mountains which always gets your attention. After a spring snow storm in Denver I headed up to this spot to capture the scene with snow covered mountains.

  • A couple of weeks ago, I was looking down at Clear Creek Canyon just prior to sunset and noticed the visible road. Later that evening I visited the same location and captured the scene under a full moon with some of the twilight still apparent on the horizon. This is a 30 second image with the moon light allowing the detail of the mountains to show in the image.

  • It was a much different day in the Denver area today then yesterday. With cold temperatures and overcast skies I went looking for an image leading me up Lookout Mountain from Golden. Quickly I ended up in the fog which was quite thick at times. Upon reaching Windy Saddle, I stopped to see the view (which there was none) but soon noticed the frost on the trees in the area. Grabbing a long lens I photographed a tree nearby on the trail in the dwindling light just prior to sunset today. With the final day of November here, this is a reminder of winter just being around the corner.

  • On a fall evening I ventured to a location above Clear Creek Canyon just prior to sunset. As I watched the sunset over the Rocky Mountains I started photographing the traffic heading through the canyon on a full moon evening. As the traffic made its way through the canyon below the light from the moon illuminated the landscape as the clouds moved through the evening dusk. With a 30 second exposure I was able to capture the movement of the clouds and start to also include in the image the stars as the day ended.

  • I headed up Clear Creek Canyon with a friend who is familiar with the area from his many trips here fishing. As we stopped at a parking area in the dark we climbed up higher to get a perspective over the road. Highway 6 can be busy with traffic heading to the casinos and other mountain locations west of Golden. However at times you can also find a lone car as in this image.
