• As I spent the day exploring on Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay, I came across a water storage unit. With the age of the wooden storage structure I got close to capture the details of the wood and metal rings which were starting to rust. From the position I was in of the structure I was careful to position one of the tension tighteners so it was in the upper right of the frame.

 • As I was walking along Ocean Beach in San Francisco, I headed up the hill towards the Cliff House, from here you can look directly down on the beach. This is where I noticed the beach and water coming together and also leaving a reminder of the prior wave coming onto the beach during low tide. Using a telephoto lens I was able to zoom in close to the beach and waited from the next wave too come onshore giving three distinct variations of color.

 • While in San Francisco I was walking towards the Ferry Terminal to catch a boat to Alameda when I noticed the 101 California building in the late afternoon light. With the sun almost set I made my way to the building and with a long lens looked up to capture the lines and patterns with some remaining sunlight.

 • I started the day by photography the San Francisco skyline from Bay Farm Island and while driving back I noticed the sun rising through the Chuck Corica Golf Course in Alameda. With the morning mist in the area filtering the light I quickly found a parking spot and captured images of the scene as the started to rise. After about 10 minutes the scene changed from what first caught my eye on this quiet morning in the East Bay.

 • On a quiet November morning, I headed to the other side of Alameda near Grand Harbor and photographed the harbor with Oakland in the distance. It was a still morning with some clouds in the area this year, and as I was photographing this a few boaters were heading to the boat ramp to start the day.

 • I headed out for a little while and experienced a nice sunset on Bay Farm Island in Alameda, California today during a pleasant November day. This is an area I have visited before and have also enjoyed photographing the trees and the shapes they have become due to the wind along San Francisco Bay. With the nice day there were plenty of people out jogging and riding their bikes for fun as well as to/from work, with one who happened to pass by as I framed this shot for today.

 • A nice day in the Bay Area found me at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. With low tide quickly approaching I was able to walk lower on the beach and watch the patterns being left as the water slid back into the ocean. In this image I got the camera close to the sand being careful where the shadow of my camera showing and not getting too low. The other challenge is being aware of where the water is coming ashore with the camera just above the sand.

 • On Thanksgiving morning this past year I headed to the Lake Merritt area near downtown Oakland to capture the city prior to sunrise. For most of the years I have been doing the Thirty Days Project, I have photographed first thing in the morning the skyline where I was on Thanksgiving Day to allow me to spend time with family the rest of the day. This morning while along the lake there was already a steady number of runners and walkers out for their morning exercise.

 • While visiting San Francisco I walked over to the Golden Gate Bridge from the Ferry Terminal (yes a good walk) and took some images of the bridge. With the wind blowing this day I noticed the flag being able to be part of the image which I captured here. There wasn’t much time to take the image without people but on a weekday it made it a little easier with some patience.

 • Today I headed into San Francisco via BART and once arriving at the Montgomery Street Station I started to walk through tunnels, over hills, through the Presido and wound up at the Golden Gate Bridge. While returning back on the bridge towards San Francisco, I noticed the shadow from the bridge to the bay below and stopped to photograph this scene as a boat emerged from under the bridge. After the bridge I headed back towards BART with some more walking and earned a bunch of Thanksgiving leftovers upon returning home.

 • Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe is a much visited and photographed location. Waking up early I headed to the area above the Bay from Stateline, Nevada to photograph the morning light.

 • Lassen National Park is located a few hours north of Sacramento. The park contains the southern-most volcano in the Cascade Range which is Lassen Peak. Throughout the park you will find still active mud pots and other types of activity. I stopped in the park in late 2009 while on a road trip from Sacramento to Denver with a friend. Even in the short time we stopped at the park it was an interesting site to see in the fall and is on my list of places to visit again.

 • A few years ago while at Lake Tahoe, I took advantage of the snow at lake level and went snowshoeing along the lake. With camera in hand I captured some images along the fresh snow. With a lone sailboat in this location I was able to frame the image to capture this along with the blue skies and snow on this one day it was not snowing in the area.

 • Plymouth, California is about an hour southeast of Sacramento. In October 2008 I was in the area during a week long trip to northern California. Exploring some of the roads I came across this tree early one morning and thought the barbed wire and the look of the tree were complimentary in meaning.

 • Located in the southwest corner of Lake Tahoe, Emerald Bay is a picturesque location on its own. On this morning I work up early to capture sunrise over the lake to find most overcast skies. Finding a position to capture the scene I was quickly treated to a burst of color over the mountains in the distance at the pre-dawn light which last just a couple of minutes.

 • While in the Bay Area for a few days visiting my sister and her family, I headed into San Francisco via BART on two of the days and just photographed on the street. As I had a tilt-shift lens with me the majority of the images taken on the first of the two days was with this lens as shown in the image below.

The tilt-shift lens lets you control the focal plane of the camera different than with a normal lens. This lens is commonly used for architecture in order to remove any converging lines you may get when photographing a building from below. In this instance I used the features of the lens to provide some selective focus for this cable car waiting to be turned around and head back to Market Street.

 • When visiting Napa in the fall of 2008 besides the traditional photographs of wine country, I also wanted to explore the area in a different manner as well. I tried a few concepts I was thinking about and just by playing with motion decided to use this in a few images. This motion gave the images some more depth and the image also takes on a different meaning. This image was captured at 1/45 second, using a 70mm lens hand held.

 • I was heading back across San Francisco Bay to Bay Farm Island as the sky started to light up during sunset. From the back of the ferry I watched as the sky changed color first across San Francisco and then across the peninsula as the ferry headed south. This was a nice surprise after a day exploring the City and Angel Island.
