• Walking along the side of Mendenhall Lake on a winter day there were patterns in the ice which drew my attention. This image is the end of the ice with the lake below. The contrast of the light of the ice and the darkness of the lake was caught by the camera as a metered to allow this to happen.

 • Standing on Mendenhall Lake recently I looked down at the fresh snow on the lake which was frozen in my area. I have noticed over the past winters when in Juneau the different shape the snow takes which you can see on the ice itself in this image. As the coverage of snow varied I used this to build negative and positive space in the image created.

 • I started 2017 in Juneau, Alaska. That day I headed out to photograph sunrise and sunset which both brought plenty of color. For sunset I was at Auke Bay when I started to notice the color starting to appear in the sky. I found a good spot near Statter Harbor and watched the sunset for the evening. Plenty of people stopped by this location to capture the sunset using smart phones to large cameras. Towards the bottom of the image you can see a little bit of a harbor seal which was enjoying swimming in front of us this evening as well.

 • It had been clear in Juneau for quite a few days in a row so I took advantage of this and headed to Sandy Beach to photograph the Treadwell Mine Pump House. In the winter sunrise will happen down the Gastineau Channel which allows the sunrise color to fall behind the pump house which I captured just prior to the start of winter. On this morning, low tide had just occurred at 1.2′ and it was starting to head towards the 20.1′ just after lunch.

The Pump House is one of the few remaining structures of Treadwell and is a well known site for those familiar with the Juneau area.

 • Mendenhall Glacier is one of the tourist destinations in Juneau. During the winter the area takes on a different look as depending on the temperature the lake can be frozen, or the glacier can be covered in fresh snow.

On this day both of these instances were in place. With some snow a few days earlier the glacier still snow covered and the lake was mostly frozen. There were places where it was a little slushy and we later found out that on the day that this was taken someone did indeed break through the ice. The large piece of ice caught my attention here which is really hard to put into perspective without scale in this image, but it was quite significant.

 • I was looking out the window at the clouds moving just prior to sunrise. I grabbed my camera and quickly headed down to the Gastineau Channel just as the sun was rising for the last day of November. With some clouds around the sky started to light up over some mountains with fresh snow on them from the rain earlier in the week. The colorful skies lasted for a little while before the overcast skies moved back in for the remainder of the day.

 • The new Alaska State Museum reopened in Juneau in 2016. While traveling to Juneau they were constructing the new building which I was able to watch grow from the ground up during my visits there. On a November day, I was walking past the museum and noticed the reflection being case from the glass windows in front. The majority of this image is glass which is reflecting the siding of the museum which is showing a little on the right of the frame, looking carefully you can see the difference in the color between the two.

 • Fresh snow had fallen throughout Juneau earlier in the week and cold weather and clear skies soon followed for a number of days. Taking advantage of these conditions I headed out to photograph around the area. In the middle of winter this is really only about seven hours but with the low light it is easy to take advantage of all that time quite quickly. Stopping by Auke Lake on the way back into the downtown area was more so a chance stop at the right time as some color filled the skies over Mendenhall Glacier in the distance.

 • The skies have cleared and the full moon allowed for some evening photography during a November week in Juneau. With these conditions, I headed to Skater’s Cabin which is along Mendenhall Lake.

Upon arriving at the parking area for the cabin it was cool and clear and the moon was just rising over the Juneau Ice Field. This allowed for a long exposure as the moon providing the lighting this evening. After taking this image I walked over to the lake which is showing some signs of freezing over due to the cold nights however there is still more water than ice visible at this stage.

 • It was a November morning with some rain in Juneau. I headed back to Douglas but this time Sandy Beach.

It was just past low tide so there was still plenty of open area to walk around on the beach with the rain falling. After about a quarter mile I reached the Pump House which brought water into the mining area of Treadwell. Looking down the channel there was nice layering as I photographed between the pilings and the line between them for drying fish.

 • One winter while in Juneau I headed out to Treadwell on a Sunday afternoon. Treadwell is an old mining area on Douglas Island across from downtown Juneau. I started off by exploring the area away from the Gastineau Channel and then headed back towards the parking lot along the water. With the Taku winds blowing that day, but less than in the prior few days, it was nice to have the wind at my back. After passing the pump house, I turned around to look at the building noticing this image as the pump house is surrounded by water during high tide.

 • Just after Thanksgiving a good amount of snow fell in Juneau, and last night some more started to fall. With camera in hand I headed over to the Governors Mansion to photograph the holiday lights with some fresh snow falling. The mansion itself is in a residential area not too far from the capitol building.

 • The full moon was out on this day and it was the closest the moon has been in 70 years. One of the effects of this is the change in the tide levels in Juneau with at times the next few days swings of 25 feet between high and low tide in the area.

When flying into Juneau just a few hours earlier I noticed the tide was quite high, but when I was out at Sheep Creek it was nearing low tide already. With this change it allowed for the creek to show out it flows out to the Gastineau Channel and eventually to the ocean.

 • The Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau is a popular spot for tourists to visit in the summer. One winter while in Juneau on a cold weekend I headed out to the glacier and joined the many of others who were walking across Mendenhall Lake towards the glacier.

As the weather had not really climbed out of the single digits for a few days the lake was indeed frozen giving the opportunity to walk towards the ice caves in a more direct manner than normal. With the end of the day quickly coming I just made it to the glacier itself and captured this image showing the size of the glacier itself. Even through the snow you can still see a little blue of the glacier.

 • After a week of clear skies the rain returned for most of the week. Those times the clouds roll into Juneau it does become interesting looking at the mountains around town. As I was looking towards the Mount Roberts tram on this day the lines of trees were showing for a little while in the fog allowing me to capture this image, however just a few minutes later the fog got thicker and this tree not far way disappeared from my view.

 • Eaglecrest Ski Area is about twenty minutes from downtown Juneau where I decided to head during the day. As I started on the road up the mountain, I noticed stretches of straight road as we left the fog. Near the crossing of Fish Creek I pulled the car over and captured this image where you could almost see blue sky which was a nice change after a few days in the fog. The ski resort is not yet open, but will do so in a few weeks for the season bringing more traffic to the road then what I saw on this day.

 • I took a quick walk along the harbor and Gastineau Channel this morning prior to flying out. It had been quite foggy during the week but on this day the clouds did lift a little and even a sucker hole or two appeared.

The harbor is an integral part of Juneau as during the summer months thousands of people arrive daily to visit the city from the various cruise ships which stop here. This image is looking at one of the transitions from the harbor to downtown and then onward to Douglas Island on a quiet November day in Juneau.

 • It's back to clouds and some rain in Juneau. As I headed back downtown and noticed the view of the pilings under the pier. Using a long lens I isolated a subset of pilings and worked to catch the reflection in Gastineau Channel. The tide was at a normal level allowing some of the growth to show just above the water level at this time today.

 • The forecast was for some active skies overnight with the Northern Lights and with the clear skies the past few days it was a must to go and check them out. Just after arriving to Mendenhall Glacier you could start to see them form in the sky however using a longer exposure they definitely do show up better with the camera. t was a chilly evening with the clear skies so after spending a little over an hour at the location I headed back to the warmth of the the car and home.

 • As I explored North Douglas in Juneau, Alaska, I came across some frost on the rocks by the water. With the large change in tides which takes place every six hours this is not too uncommon as the weather starts to get cooler as was the case when I took this in November one year. As I got closer to the rocks the detail which could be found on each one was quite interesting and also caught my attention to photograph for a little while.

 • As I walked down a trail in Juneau in late fall, I looked down and noticed in an area the frost still on the leaves late into the day. It was a week of cold temperatures as the lake by Mendenhall Glacier had frozen over in just a couple of days. As I slowed down to check out the area I looked for some some full leaves to photograph and capture the frost as a first sign of winter in southeast Alaska.

 • On a November day, I headed back towards the Mendenhall Glacier. Even though it was a sunny day it has been cold enough lately that the lake near the glacier is starting to freeze allowing you to walk onto the ice. Now that it is been frozen for just a few days probably not too wise to be out there however there were a few people skating across the lake. Looking down near the shoreline some interesting formations with the rocks and the bubbles starting to form.

 • I headed out to a pier near downtown Juneau to capture the early morning light prior to sunrise. With sunrise almost 8:00am it doesn't require that early of a wake-up call but still enough to get the pre-dawn light. As I have mentioned before outside of the cruise ship season it is definitely a different city.

 • A full moon which is always a great time to head out and photograph in the evening. Heading up to the valley in Juneau I started walking out on the airport trail when I looked behind me and noticed the snow on McGinnis Mountain. As the clouds moved in front of the mountain I composed an image and waited for some clearer skies. It didn't take too long for that to happen as I captured this image.

 • If you have been to Juneau at all you know that it rains in this area of Alaska, yes it is a rainforest. So on an evening where there were clear skies I headed out to photograph, and on this evening I ran into the full moon rising over the mountains. I quickly looked for a foreground element to add for this image and found a pair of floatplanes out at the Juneau International Airport to help frame the image on this September evening.

 • When visiting Skater's Cabin at Mendenhall Lake on a November afternoon, I was able to get a different view of Mendenhall Glacier. While it was sunny, there was still a chill in the air and the frozen lake shows that the temperatures were below freezing. While walking along the edge of the lake I could hear and see a couple of wolves across the lake defending their turf. It has been just a few days of clear days and nights with temperatures getting cold so wasn't planning on walking on the lake today but it won't be long until you could do so with caution.

 • I headed to Auke Recreation under better conditions to capture the same island I had in the past, but went with a different perspective this time around. Instead of zooming in on the island I decided to include a little of the shoreline in this image to help provide perspective of the area and the size of the island. Looking at the two you may get a sense of the difference in size as the earlier image may have made it seem a little larger than it really is under clearer conditions.

 • It really is a tale of two seasons in the state capitol of Alaska. In the summer the cruise ship season takes over the city. This image shows a typical day during the summer season in downtown. Numerous cruise ships in port and the float planes arriving from their tours of the area.

 • Auke Recreation is about 15 miles north of downtown Juneau. On a rainy evening I headed to the beach on the shoreline which is part of the Tongass National Forest. As I stood along the beach the rain was coming and going which also brought the cloud deck low at times. This small island just off the coast was coming and going in the rain and clouds. Working with a longer shutter exposure to soften the water motion I focused on the island while protecting the lens from some of the rain which was falling.

 • With my recent travels to Juneau I have been asked what is it like. Well I think this image pretty much sums up an early August afternoon in Juneau. It was a full afternoon of cruise ships, and the float planes were coming back from excursions during the day. Yes it does rain in Juneau, but you also get great days like this to enjoy the Juneau and the surrounding area.

 • While walking around Downtown Juneau, I looked across the Gastineau Channel and noticed the low clouds on Douglas Island with the fresh snow from some rain which had fallen earlier in the day on the peaks. It was a balance of finding the right break in the clouds as well as an interesting scene to photograph and when a small clearing occurred captured this image.

 • After taking the Mount Roberts Tramway from Juneau, I started to hike towards Gastineau Peak. With views of the city and surrounding area it was a great view and soon after I came across fields of wildflowers. For this image I found a collection which stood out and provided a view down the Gastineau Channel towards the airport giving the flowers the primary focus but also allowing a sense of place.

 • As I was walking the Airport Dike Trail, which starts at the northwest corner of Juneau International Airport, I watched as some of the evening aircraft landed. Currently the trail takes you through the approach lights thus when an aircraft is landing in Juneau people will stop and watch the aircraft come right over their head which was the case with this Boeing 757. With the sun starting to set late in the evening the clouds provides and interesting backdrop for the plane.

 • During the summer of 2014 I was out photographing around Douglas Island when I encountered a boat heading into the fog to go fishing. This is a color photograph, which if you look carefully you may be able to find a glimpse of some color near the pilothouse. After I took this image, I headed back towards downtown Juneau where the fog was not bad at all along the Gastineau Channel.

 • Mendenhall Glacier is located north of downtown Juneau in an area referred to as the valley. As the glacier slowly recedes the lake is forming and started to do so in 1931. If you follow the glacier up it will run into the Juneau Ice Field which is currently the 5th largest in North America.

This image was taken around 8pm with a couple of hours of sunlight still remaining on this day. Just over the shore are some pieces of ice which right after I took this image some kids went to try to retrieve but the smaller piece was just out of their reach.

 • Driving ‘Out the Road’ north of Juneau I stopped at the Eagle River as I caught the low sunlight around noon on a clear winter day. With the recent snow and cold part of this river was iced over however the water still continued to flow towards the Lynn Canal. For me the river leads to the sunlight in this midday image bringing the two elements together.

 • On a November evening I headed to North Douglas and a vantage point that I knew you could see the Chilkat Range in the distance. Once again under a moonlight evening I used a long exposure to capture the scene. The stars you see in this image do not do it justice for what I saw just a 15 minute drive from downtown Juneau. From this vantage point the mountains are the boundary between the Lynn Canal and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve.

 • After a few days of snow a the clouds cleared and nice sunny day was provided for the Juneau area. With this change I headed towards the Shrine of St. Therese to capture some images along Lynn Canal. Earlier in the month with higher winds there were people out surfing near the shrine, however with the lower waves on this day the surfers were not able to take advantage of the sunshine. While exploring the area around the shrine I found some fresh snow still along the water low sun providing some late morning light.

 • One November I was driving outside of Juneau, Alaska over lunch. As I headed out towards North Douglas I was awestruck by the mountains which appeared near Fritz Cove. Continuing down the road I waited until the island was in front of this peak and captured the image.

 • As I walked on the new walkway towards the Whale Sculpture in Juneau, I noticed the starfish which were at the edge of the steps of the seating area along the way. With the sunlight casting a shadow I spent a little time photographing these elements more so designed to limit skateboarding tricks on the wood. Standing above the starfish I was able to pick an angle which brought the lines through the image and also showed the face there was a step below.

 • As I started on the trail from the Mount Roberts Tramway I was greeted with fields of wildflowers in mid-June. I started photographing the flowers as I headed further up the trail. As I made my way back towards the tram I found this grouping of lupine with a view of Douglas Island behind. Getting low to the flowers I found an angle which captured the flowers as well as some of the snow covered mountains.

 • After the City and Borough of Juneau completed the dock expansion project they added sculptures where the cruise ships use to tie up along the boardwalk. As I walked along these one evening the sun was starting to set allowing me to posting myself in a location where the sun would be behind the metal. I then used an aperture which would give me a star effect from the sun which also comes through the metal of the sculpture.

 • I was standing on the Juneau-Douglas Bridge photographing the whale sculpture and Downtown Juneau when a Holland America cruise ship departed for the day. I quickly found a view down the Gastineau Channel to capture the cruise ship in the distance with the whale in the foreground. The water feature of the whale sculpture is not constant, thus I waited a few minutes for the water to turn on again and captured this image.

 • As I was standing along the boardwalk in Juneau, Alaska I noticed the piers under a section of walkway and how the evening light was lighting them up a little from their normally dark place. Initially I took some images of the scene, but after a little while I moved to a longer exposure length and slowly moved the camera in a vertical direction which match the primary direction of the wood pilings. The result of this movement is the look of the pilings in this photograph as well as a smoothing of the water of the Gastineau Channel below.
