  • Sometimes your plans just don't happen as you hope they would. This was the case this evening when I hiked up Green Mountain in Lakewood to get a shot of Denver and the rising full moon in November 2009. I was in the place I wanted to be, however the clouds to the east prevented the moonrise from being visible at my location. I arrived to the location ahead of time in order to look at the options for the shot I was planning on that evening. In addition to scouting the area, I also had the chance to photograph and as the sun was setting over the Rocky Mountains a trail runner and his dogs came down the path.

  • I headed up to Dinosaur Ridge to scout and take some images of a scene I first noticed a few years ago. The clouds were starting to move in so I wasn't sure if the weather would cooperate however you never know unless you are there. Once I found the location again I searched nearby for better areas and set-up my tripod be aware of small cactus in the area as well. As the sun set over the mountains I worked on some long exposures including the one in this post, leaving me better prepared as I head back to the area this spring.

  • The seats at Red Rocks are quite a popular spot not only for watching a concert at the venue, but also for exercise at other items by many people in the Denver area. As I was scouting some locations for a client shoot one weekend in the area I headed to Red Rocks and captured some images of the area. There were plenty of people running up and down the steps of across the rows within the amphitheater, and as I stood at the bottom I noticed the pattern of the steps as well as how they flowed into the distance as shown in this image.

  • As you climb on Interstate 70 west from Denver you will quickly find yourself in the mountains. After climbing in elevation at the exit for Genesee you are treated to a view of the Rocky Mountains which always gets your attention. After a spring snow storm in Denver I headed up to this spot to capture the scene with snow covered mountains.

  • A couple of weeks ago, I was looking down at Clear Creek Canyon just prior to sunset and noticed the visible road. Later that evening I visited the same location and captured the scene under a full moon with some of the twilight still apparent on the horizon. This is a 30 second image with the moon light allowing the detail of the mountains to show in the image.

  • It was a much different day in the Denver area today then yesterday. With cold temperatures and overcast skies I went looking for an image leading me up Lookout Mountain from Golden. Quickly I ended up in the fog which was quite thick at times. Upon reaching Windy Saddle, I stopped to see the view (which there was none) but soon noticed the frost on the trees in the area. Grabbing a long lens I photographed a tree nearby on the trail in the dwindling light just prior to sunset today. With the final day of November here, this is a reminder of winter just being around the corner.

  • On a fall evening I ventured to a location above Clear Creek Canyon just prior to sunset. As I watched the sunset over the Rocky Mountains I started photographing the traffic heading through the canyon on a full moon evening. As the traffic made its way through the canyon below the light from the moon illuminated the landscape as the clouds moved through the evening dusk. With a 30 second exposure I was able to capture the movement of the clouds and start to also include in the image the stars as the day ended.

  • Exploring one evening I went to the backside of Green Mountain and as I crossed C-470 I noticed the traffic flowing in the darkness of the night. Looking down at the road with my headlamp on I found an opening in the fencing and positioned my camera for some longer exposures in the area. It was just past the new moon so it was quite dark in the area with an occasional mountain biker passing me from their evening ride on the mountain. After spending some time at the location I thought of some new ideas to photograph in the area and will be back in the upcoming weeks to try those ideas out with my camera.

  • One evening I was photographing "behind" Green Mountain in Lakewood, which is the area along C-470. My goal that evening was to capture some long exposures of the freeway traffic, however I also did some long exposures towards the city. This image is the result, which is Green Mountain in the foreground as the lights of Denver illuminate the sky allowing use to see the defined ridges of the mountain. Rising above the stars appear on a cool fall evening in Colorado.

  • The full moon is once again approaching and in the evening it is bright enough to experiment with some night photography. I headed to Golden, Colorado and photographed Lookout Mountain. If you have ever driven the road you know there are many twists and turns along the way. From a distance back I set-up my tripod and worked to capture the cars along the road just after sunset while letting the bright moon illuminate the mountain itself.

  • While out photographing one night, I headed into the foothills where I had a perspective looking down at a road below. Waiting for the traffic to head into the scene I captured a thirty second exposure of a mixture of moving traffic as well as cars waiting for the light to change so they may be on their way in the early evening. With some mild temperatures early this week as well as a full moon I have been out working on expanding this group of work as well this week.

  • You most likely have seen the cross in the foothills to the west of Denver which was first illuminated in 1964. The location of the cross is Mount Lindo Cemetery which is accessed from Turkey Creek in Morrison. As I was driving along Alameda I noticed this perspective with the sunset and found a spot to capture the ridge line as well as the colors in the sky on a windy afternoon.

  • I headed up Clear Creek Canyon with a friend who is familiar with the area from his many trips here fishing. As we stopped at a parking area in the dark we climbed up higher to get a perspective over the road. Highway 6 can be busy with traffic heading to the casinos and other mountain locations west of Golden. However at times you can also find a lone car as in this image.
