  • As I explored Quebec City, I found a small street in the Lower Old Town which had umbrellas hanging the small area. Over the course of two days I visited this street multiple times to capture the colorful umbrellas with a different sky as a background. On my final day in Quebec City it was a nice clear day which allowed me to have a constant background but also position the sun to allow it to show just a little bit behind one of the umbrellas.

  • I first visited Quebec City when I was nine and on a recent visit to the city still remembered some of the paths we took and that young age. This time around on one of the evenings there, I watched the afternoon turn to evening looking down at the Chateau Frontenac and St. Lawrence River. The old city of Quebec City really has the European charm and feel as I spent time exploring and photographing some of the architecture in the city.

  • As I stayed in Quebec City I noticed looking out the window the reflection of the older building I was in from the modern building across the street. This gave me an idea for a photograph, so I took my camera and worked to find the best location to take the image which would align the windows in the older building. When taking an image like this the direction of light is important and as it was shining in my direction I had to be careful for lens flare in the camera itself.

  • As I explored Victoria, British Columbia one summer I timed my path to be near the Parliament Building at sunset. As the sky turned to dusk I looked for images of the building as it lit up for the evening. Using a just of off center spot it allows the viewer to see behind the fountain in front of the building and continue to make their way to the building as they view the image.

  • While in Montreal during the fall there was plenty of fall foliage in full display. The various colors on the trees and ground were quite impressive. As I explored the city I came across a pond with leaves which had fallen into the water. With the moving water I used a slow shutter speed to capture a little of the movement of the leaf against the rocks on the bottom.

  • Walking around Olympic Stadium in Montreal I noticed the light on the metal buildings as they reflected the midday light. Working from different angles I was able to position the buildings overlapping with a nice blue sky to add to this minimal photograph of the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium.

  • When visiting Victoria, British Columbia a few years ago I captured this image of a yellow flower while visiting Butchart Gardens. This is a great place to photograph and capture close-up images of flowers and also work on abstract imagery.

  • There is something to be said about the magnitude of the Butchart Gardens in Victoria, Canada. A few years ago I visited the gardens and it is one of those places you can spend all day with your camera. After a while I focused my efforts on using a macro lens in the rose gardens and looking for interesting elements in the flowers themselves which is the above image.

  • While visiting Vancouver exploring the city I photographed some of the city and one thing which I found interest in was the roof line of Canada Place. When first viewing the roof is reminded me of Denver International Airport however the lines at both are a little different. This image was taken from a distance capturing just the roof of the building and the lines and patterns it creates on the Vancouver waterfront.

  • Visiting Butchart Gardens in Victoria, British Columbia during a vacation a few years ago I spent much time with my macro lens getting close with many of the roses and other flowers in the gardens. Just prior to leaving I came across a group of flowers in a quiet part of the park and spent close to thirty minutes just on these flowers. With the macro lens it is possible to get a shallow depth of field (having a few items in focus) which is what I explored in this photograph.

  • As the Malaspina navigated the Inside Passage I took the opportunity to explore with some different types of photography. As the sun went down I headed to the front of the ship and took some long exposures as we sailed along Vancouver Island. Using the railing as a steady surface the land around allowed a hint of motion as we turned through the waterways of the passage.

  • March along the Inside Passage of Alaska and British Columbia can bring various types of weather. As the Malaspina sailed south towards Bellingham I encountered great weather for the majority of the trip. This allowed for some nice sunrises along the way. As I made my way to the front of the vessel along British Columbia I watched the sun rise onto the bow of the boat. This was a great start to the day of watching the scenic landscapes all around.
